The level of chemical compounds considered harmful to humans. Hundreds of tons of product, processed to make concentrates, have already been commercialized. Two brothers have been reported as owners of a Campania company leader in the canning sector
of Chiara Marasca
The 821 tons of semi-processed tomatoes from Egypt seized in the Salerno area were contaminated with pesticides and therefore risky for the health of consumers. The measure ordered by the Procura della Repubblica of Nocera Inferiore, as part of the Scarlatto due investigation, was carried out by the Carabinieri for the Protection of Agri-food. The level of chemical compounds detected in the tomato was such as to make the investigators believe that the risk of harm to human health was concrete. The goods, worth one million euros, were stored in thousands of metal drums each containing an average of 250 kg of tomatoes and were waiting to be processed and packaged, usually in jars and tubes of different formats, such as double or triple concentrate. The products were mainly intended for the foreign market, Germany and the Maldives in particular.
Hundreds of tons already sold
But despite the large quantity of goods seized, it is only what remains of a much larger batch: it has been ascertained, in fact, that a few hundred tons have already been marketed in EU and non-EU countries. Tomatoes from Egypt were processed in a company in Agro-Nocerino-Sarnese, a leader in the canning sector: the two brothers who own the company were denounced both for commercial fraud and for the trade in harmful food substances. The blitz, also triggered with the support of the Territorial and Forestry Army of Campania, follows in a few weeks another investigative activity of the Carabinieri Command for the Protection of Agri-food, the Scarlatto operation, always in the canning sector and to protect the interests of consumers, which has seen the seizure of thousands of tons of tomato concentrate of foreign origin, fraudulently inserted into the production cycle to create canned food illegally marketed as 100% Tuscan tomatoes.
