Four people belonging to the same Muslim family were killed by a 20-year-old who hit them in a car while walking in London, in the Canadian province of Ontario. The victims are three adults and a teenager, while a fifth person of young age struggles between life and death in the hospital, reports the local press. In detail they died a 74-year-old woman, a 46-year-old man, a 44-year-old woman and a 15-year-old girl. A nine-year-old boy would be in serious condition. The family immigrated to Canada from Pakistan 14 years ago.
Pakistani family hit, 4 dead: “Targeted for their faith”
London Police Chief Steve Williams said investigators believe it was “an intentional act” and that “the victims of this horrendous incident were targeted for their Islamic faith.” “It was an act of mass murder perpetrated against Muslims,” London Mayor Ed Holder said. A 20-year-old, Nathaniel Veltman, was arrested for the attack. The young man was stopped in a shopping center less than ten kilometers away, was charged with murder and attempted murder.
He did not know the victims personally, but he would have targeted them because they were Muslim. With his pick-up he overwhelmed them at full speed. Police are unable to say at the moment whether the suspect is part of a specific group and investigators are hard at work investigating potential terrorism allegations. Multi-ethnic Canada is once again dealing with racial hatred. The National Council of Canadian Muslims reported over 300 “incidents” from 2015 to 2019, including more than 30 acts of physical violence.
“These innocent human beings were killed simply because they were Muslims,” said Nawaz Tahir, a representative of the Islamic community in London. “We will remain strong against hatred – he added – strong against Islamophobia, against terrorism, with faith, love and the search for justice”.
