I wonder if to accompany the President of the Republic today Sergio Mattarella he will also be in the new Linate, Yape, the whitish droid on two wheels that yesterday he drove in the midst of the last finishing works. Certainly the Head of State will be welcomed by the highest regional, city and airport officials to inaugurate the new boarding area that at the same time also the bet on the refurbishment concluded despite the pandemic, the almost zeroing of world air transport and the collapse of revenues. So much so that a Michaela Castelli, president of Sea (the management company of Linate and Malpensa), which have been very intense three years, in which the decision to continue with the work was difficult and painful (the total investment of 40 million euros). But today we see the results and going back I would make that choice again.
After restyling of the facade (2018) from tomorrow travelers will find a brighter Linate (thanks to the LED system), a redesigned check-in area with personalized counters, a higher false ceiling and an aesthetic that, with its green plants, is more reminiscent of a Scandinavian airport. The paths of the safety filters and the section duty free, as well as the new structure – demolished and rebuilt – which houses on three levels the new boarding gates, a shopping area and, under the sail ceiling, the catering floor.
Remaking an airport is not a simple one makeup. To the architectural planning was applied neuroscience for the first time in a European facility, points out Alessandro Fidato, Chief operating officer of Sea. It means that the emotional needs of the passenger have been taken into account. An example? Metal detectors are – together with customs controls – the element of maximum stress for the traveler who instead wants to feel welcomed. Here then the warm colors and the wood paneling at the security gates. While immediately afterwards they prevail light colors (white) and relaxing (green). Between a purchase and a meal there is also the opportunity to admire some works of art by famous Italian designers thanks to the collaboration with the Milan Triennale. Another curiosity: the handrails are coated with copper supplied by Kme with anti-microbial properties.
We are happy to deliver the new Linate to Milan just when there is a first restart of the flows, he explains Armando Brunini, CEO of Sea. After a winter with a drop of 85% and a May at -80%, at the beginning of June we recorded -70%. It is, he continues, an airport that makes widespread use of latest generation technology and show attention to environmental sustainability. For July and August we see that the offer of seats for sale is 50%, Brunini calculates. The road to returning to the numbers of 2019 – a record year for the Sea airport system – is still long.
