An exhibit to the Superintendency of Rome for an archaeological check on the construction site for the construction of urbanization works relating to the new district of Santa Palomba. This is what was presented by Danilo Ballanti, of the Castelli Romani Communist Party, Marco Moresco, of the Association for the Defense of Health, and Enrico del Vescovo, of Italia Nostra Castelli Romani in recent days.
“The area of Santa Palomba-Palazzo-Cancelliera constitutes the heart of a local culture universally known as the Latin Civilization”, They write in a note. “Inside the Tenuta di Palazzo, there are the remains of a large suburban villa dating back to the end of the Republican age, the villa of Quinto Valerio Sorano which was never completely excavated, but only perimeter. An extensive necropolis, still unpublished, with pit tombs from the early imperial age was also discovered on the northern edge of the complex.”.
The target is the construction of a new neighborhood with a thousand homes, partly ‘social’, which in recent years received the green light from the Municipality of Rome and which will rise on via Cancelliera, in the extreme southern outskirts of Rome, at inside the municipal area close to Albano and Pomezia. Last March a group of associations, from Legambiente to Unione Inquilini passing through the section of the Castelli Romani of Italia Nostra, had demonstrated in the Campidoglio to ask for a step back.
“The land in the locality of Santa Palomba in the territory between the municipalities of Rome, Albano and Pomezia, in the last 50 years has been the subject of excavations, dissected, turned and sieved, bringing to light numerous remains of ancient roads, tombs, villas, temples, sanctuaries. , mausoleums, nymphaeums, cisterns, aqueducts, tunnels, terraces together with a multitude of testimonies of social and daily life over the centuries; vases, jewels, furnishings, ex voto, funeral objects, terra cotte”, The note continues. “We believe that the local archaeological treasures, famous all over the world, must be adequately protected and valued ”. Among the examples, the so-called “Via Sacra, which probably led from Lavinium to Monte Cavo, was in fact covered in its time, while other remains in the area – such as the Villa di Sorano – remained piled in the open and covered with brambles.”.
The Communist Party and Italia Nostra dei Castelli Romani and the Association for the defense of health denounce: “The works for the construction of the urbanization works relating to private intervention number 1 lot 3 north, as part of the integrated program “Santa Palomba” are proceeding rapidly and from the photos that we have received from residents, the risk of a serious archaeological risk emerges: it would seem that various finds, such as paving stones of Roman roads and other elements, are scattered around the site”.
The note concludes: “Instead of enhancing the area of Santa Palomba-Palazzo-Cancelliera with the riches of archeology, the poor urban planning choices made by the municipality of Rome will produce in the Palazzo-Cancelliera area a ghetto district of 16 8-storey buildings (such as Tor Bella Monaca or Scampia) with a view of the new cemetery of Albano-Cancelliera, in the midst of the fumes and miasma of the future wet treatment plant of Albano-Cancelliera and the wastewater treatment plant of the new district, just one kilometer away from the mega – Roncigliano landfill”.
Meanwhile, in recent days, the Lazio Regional Council approved a motion signed by the President of the Urban Planning Commission, Marco Cacciatore, to ask to verify the sustainability of the settlement. “In my opinion unsustainable and disjointed “, writes Cacciatore, “potentially flawed in the forms as suggested by representatives of local communities. The area is extremely peripheral and devoid of the most basic services, the procedure did not involve the neighboring municipalities, the excerpts on the buildings and the urbanization works were carried out first, the protection of the water basins ordered by resolutions was not taken into account regional. This project had been dormant for years, but with the Giunta Raggi it was perfected at an administrative level. It is necessary for the Region to intervene, as usual, on the risks to which the Capitoline Council exposes the future of the City. That’s why I asked the council to coordinate with the Municipality of Rome to check the conditions of the Print to ensure the livability of the place and the sustainability of the settlement”.
