MANTUA. Bad weather has battered a large part of the province. In the late afternoon of Sunday 6 June, storms struck in different areas: from the capital to the area of Cerese di Borgo Virgilio, up to Piubega, where a lightning bolt burned a house and Poggio Rusco.
All this, as unfortunately happens more and more frequently, in a short time, concentrating the intensity of the precipitation and not giving the time to drains and sewage systems, calibrated to dispose of the volumes expected decades ago, to evacuate the water from the streets.
Rain, and in some cases hail, fell with tropical intensity, exceeding 200 millimeters per hour, in part of the Bassa (229 millimeters / hour recorded in San Benedetto Po), in the Middle Mantua (209 in Mantua) and in the ‘Asolano.
In the capital, even 66 millimeters rained, or the average rainfall that falls for a month, concentrated in about an hour. Several streets in the center ended up underwater. Via Nazario Sauro was closed by the local police in the most critical phase, while a dangerous flooding was created in via Brennero, which forced the province to carry out an inspection to even decide whether to close the important road artery to traffic.
In the end, everything remained open, just as the road between Castellucchio and Ospitaletto was reopened, interrupted by the fall of a plant and the Civil Protection intervened. In Cerese, about ten streets in the historic center of the town had problems. About fifteen flooded basements. On site, in addition to the firefighters, also the municipal civil protection Sirio and the mayor Francesco Aporti.
First citizen in the field also in Poggio Rusco because the passage of the storm made several roads almost impassable (the Carnevale, Trento and Trieste, Mazzini, Cimarosa streets). Fabio Zacchi he made an appeal to fellow citizens, asking them not to use the car unless strictly necessary.
