COVID: ANTIBODIES DISCOVERED against CORONAVIRUS thanks to an entirely ITALIAN technique. The details
ANTIBODIES DISCOVERED against CORONAVIRUS They have been discovered NEW ANTIBODIES able to counteract the infection of the SarsCoV2 virus responsible for the Covid-19 pandemic of the its English variant (or alpha, according to the new nomenclature) and that they are capable of blocking other coronaviruses as well. The result, published in the Scientific Reports journal, was obtained in the laboratories of the CEINGE-Advanced Biotechnologies of Naples by the researchers of the Task Force Covid-19 financed by the Campania Region.
The aim of the project was to identify new human antibodies useful for inhibiting the infection of the SarsCoV2 virus, as claimed by the research coordinator, Claudia De Lorenzo, Professor of Biochemistry at the Department of Molecular Medicine and Medical Biotechnology of the Federico II University e principal
investigator del CEINGE. The starting point, as reported by Ansa, was the analysis of fragments of human antibodies, among which those who had similarities were selected. In this way, antibodies able to specifically bind the Spike protein were identified, the main weapon with which the SarsCoV2 virus attaches itself to cells. “We have chosen a specific region of the Spike protein, which we know is present on the viral lining and which is responsible for the interaction with the ACE2 receptor on the surface of the cells of our respiratory tract.”, he added From Lorenzo. Some of the antibodies obtained, he added, “they have been shown to inhibit the infection of human cell cultures with the SarsCoV2 virus and its English variant”.
The new technique used
it may allow other antibodies to be isolated in the future specific for certain regions of the molecular targets that play a key role in the pathology to be combated.
