The systematic tracking of Covid, finally, can be done: a new phase of the epidemic in our country, which opens up to a management based on the containment and identification of cases and on the tracing of their contacts.

Excellent data are those of the pandemic in Italy, which records a curve of infections among the lowest in Europe. The incidence, both on the entire national territory and in all the Regions and Autonomous Provinces, continues to decrease and is almost everywhere below 50 per 100 thousand inhabitants every 7 days, with the exception of Valle D’Aosta, where it is just above.

Incidence, Rt and situation of hospitals in Italy

According to what is reported in the latest ISS report, with the reference period from 24 to 30 May, this week the decline inweekly incidence, which drops to an average of 36 per 100 thousand inhabitants, up from 51 last week. Most of the cases reported this week most likely contracted the infection in the first half of May.

In the period 11-24 May, the contagion index Mean Rt calculated on symptomatic cases was equal to 0.68 (range 0.65–0.75), down compared to the previous week, and below 1 also in the upper limit, so all the Regions are in a type 1 scenario.

No Region exceeds the critical occupancy threshold for beds in the intensive care or medical area. The employment rate in intensive care is 12%, below the critical threshold, with a decrease in the number of people hospitalized, which goes from 1,323 to 1,033. The employment rate in medical areas nationwide drops further to 11%). The number of people hospitalized in these areas goes from 8,577 to 6,482 (31/05/2021).

According to this trend, almost all of Italy will be a white zone from mid-June. This is the prediction of Silvio Brusaferro, president of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità, so we are facing a scenario of progressive decrease of the infection. “The picture of Europe is improving, Italy is in orange with a decreasing curve of infections among the lowest in Europe” he explains.

Who gets sick the most from Covid today

The municipalities of many areas of Italy are white, which shows a clear decrease in cases. “The median age at first diagnosis is slightly decreasing, under 40, like last summer. The decrease in the average age at the first hospitalization also continues, 58 years in the last week ”.

Not only: three quarters of those who contract the infection are asymptomatic or with few symptoms and cases decrease in all age groups, including younger ones, details in the usual press conference on the analysis of the control room monitoring data.

In the over 60s, just like the over 80s before, it is observed that, as the percentage of vaccination coverage increases, the number of new cases decreases, as does hospitalization, hospitalization in intensive care and the rate of mortality.

The fundamental role of the anti-Covid vaccine

According to what emerged from the first national ISS study on the impact of the anti Covid-19 vaccination, published by the Istituto Superiore di Sanità, thanks to the vaccine the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection, hospitalization and death among people who received the first or both doses.

The analysis showed that the risk of Covid infection, hospitalization and death progressively decreases after the first two weeks after the vaccine, while starting from 35 days from the beginning of the vaccination cycle there is an 80% reduction in infections, 90% of hospitalizations and 95% of deaths. These effects are similar in both men and women and in people of different age groups.

About the variants there is to worry about? “We know the variants that circulate. In particular, the English variant is now the variant that acts as a background, it is the one that circulates the most. However, we do know that there are other variants present, which may have greater transmissibility and / or may partially evade the immune response. All this obviously requires great attention, great caution and also great readiness in tracing, identification and sequencing ”, underlines Brusaferro.

We know, according to a study just published in Lancet, that the Cominarty vaccine produced by Pfizer / BioNTech produces lower levels of antibodies against the Indian variant, but becomes extremely effective against all Sars-Cov-2 variants after the second dose, even if it would leave people who have received only one more at risk.

For this reason, therefore, it becomes even more fundamental to get vaccinated and complete the vaccination schedule as indicated by the local health authorities. The vaccination campaign continues at full speed after the acceleration given by Commissioner Figliuolo (here all the info on how to book the vaccine Region by Region).

Too early to say when we will emerge from the pandemic, because, in addition to the variants, the severe inequalities between countries, both in the management of the epidemic and in the administration of vaccines. What is certain is that “no country will be safe until all countries are safe”, as reiterated in the report published on the European Commission’s website and created by a panel of 26 scientists, set up by the president of the EU Commission Ursula Von. der Leyen and by the Italian premier Mario Draghi as president of the G20.

The new colors of the Regions from Monday 7 June

Returning to the Belpaese, based on these encouraging data, like every week on health minister Roberto Speranza signed a new ordinance, effective from Monday 7 June, which provides for the passage of the Regions Abruzzo, Liguria, Umbria and Veneto in the white area.

Overall, therefore, the breakdown of the Regions and Autonomous Provinces in the different areas based on the risk levels starting from 7 June 2021 is this:

  • white area (here all the rules): Abruzzo, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Liguria, Molise, Sardinia, Umbria, Veneto
  • yellow zone (here all the rules): Basilicata, Calabria, Campania, Emilia Romagna, Lazio, Lombardy, Marche, Piedmont, Autonomous Province of Bolzano, Autonomous Province of Trento, Puglia, Sicily, Tuscany, Aosta Valley.

From Monday 7 June there is also a very important novelty for the yellow areas: the curfew is in fact further extended from 11pm to midnight (here all the info in detail).
