MONTMELÒ – It was thought that he could conquer the front row with relative ease, but Franco Morbidelli is nonetheless more than satisfied of his fifth time in qualifying.
“It was a positive day, I did a good qualifying, I feel good with the bike, I have good feelings.
I am satisfied with my three laps in Q2, even though my best would probably have been the one where they were yellow flags.
The unknown factor will be the tire for the race, you have to make the right choices, but in any case there will be a major drop in the race, you have to be ready to suffer and fight in the final. We are many with a similar pace, it will be a very tough race ”.
Do you have a strategy to beat Quartararo?
“In the race you never know what can happen, but I don’t have a strategy to challenge Fabio, I have to think about myself. I think he has a bit of an advantage here to manage, he had it in 2020 and he seems to have it again this year. I’m not the one who has to beat him ”.
Your bike continues to be the slowest on the straight.
“Mine is clearly the oldest bike: the results I get give me a lot of pride, but that doesn’t make you go faster in the race. It gives me satisfaction, but it doesn’t make me go faster ”.
Quartararo aside, who is strong?
“There are many rivals for tomorrow: Ktm, Ducati, there are many fast riders”.
Could it be a race similar to 2020?
“I think so. There is a lot of tire degradation on this track, but last year I suffered from the front, while I think tomorrow the front average will be better, but we will struggle more with the rear. In FP4 my pace was not bad, but a lot will depend on how the race goes, if I have to fight a lot or a little. And let’s not forget the Suzuki: usually, when the others drop, they do better and are faster ”.
From the starting line to the first corner there is a lot of straight: is there a risk of losing positions?
“Yes, the risk is there, it will be essential to make a good start and hope that the others are not so effective”.
Will it be a survival race?
“Yes, we will have to suffer, it is very difficult to ride the bike”.
Marquez today is attached to Miller: if it were to happen to you, how do you think you would react?
“It depends on how you are put, on your state of form. If you know you’re fast and he’s not, you don’t care, if he’s not as fast as you, it’s okay to pull him. At Mugello, Marquez and Vinales had more or less the same speed and were fighting for the position, while here Miller had more: at Mugello it was competition between the two riders, here a ‘simple’ help ”.
