Yet another pole of the “Diablo”, the fifth in a row. Miller and Zarco in the front row, Rossi in the fourth
It goes to French Fabio Quartararo the pole position of the Catalan GP, the seventh round of the MotoGP season. The “Diablo”, which closed the qualifying session in 1’38”853, conquers the fifth pole in a row in front of the two Ducati Jack Miller, fallen in the final, e Johann Zarco. Second row for Franco Morbidelli (5th), while Francesco Bagnaia (9°) e Valentino Rossi (11th) will start further back.
The circuits change, but not the ending of the script. From Portimao to Barcelona, little changes for fourth rare who places the fifth pole position in a row at Montmelò on a track that changes layout and will bring with it the exploits of the Frenchman who also conquers the record time of 1’38 ” 853. “Ariba El Diablo” and nobody can do anything about it, because when he gets on his M1 in qualifying everyone seems destined to eat the dust of the Yamaha that does not distinguish the track.
In the hope of also conquering the second success in a row after the podium at Mugello (and dedicated to the late Dupasquier) Quartararo sent a clear message to his pursuers in the general classification, with the Ducati accompanying him in the front row. Second half for Jack Miller, protagonist of a fall in the final without apparent consequences, third instead for the compatriot Johann Zarco which in Pramac continues to surprise. The other official Desmo of Pecco Bagnaia is more in difficulty, who after the ideas in free practice will be forced to start from the third row in ninth place on the grid.
Between the Ducati in the front row and that of Pecco are placed the KTM of Miguel Oliveira and the two Yamahas of Morbidelli e Vinales. A pity for Morbido, who had done so well in free practice and in qualifying he gave up at the speed of former boxing mate Quartararo. Seventh place on the starting grid for Aleix Espargarò, followed by Binder in eighth position and the world champion Mir in tenth starting box.
He falls on the first run and compromises his performance Valentino Rossi, who at Montmelò will start from the fourth row in the eleventh spot on the grid. For the “Doctor”, whose future in Petronas is shrouded in mystery, a step “back” after the good exit in FP3 when, back to the set up closest to the one seen at Mugello and pulled by his teammate Morbidelli, he had given us hope the Malaysian team.
He tried to take advantage of the Miller tow in Q1 Marc Marquez, without however having to deal with box mate Pol Espargarò. The “Cabroncito”, as already done at Mugello with Vinales, failed this time to win the pass for Q2 and tomorrow in the race he will start in the fifth row alongside the other Honda, the LCR, of Nakagami and to Ducati Pramac of Jorge Martin, which in the GP of the return from the multiple fracture caused in Portimao will start from box number 15 on the grid.
Bad fall and fright for Iker Lecuona, in the sixth row in 16th place, who will start regularly in the Catalan GP alongside two Italians: Bastianini is 17th, the box mate in Tech3 Danilo Petrucci 18 °. Last row for Luca Marini, 19 ° alongside Alex Marquez e Lorenzo Savadori.
