VAJONT. The machine of institutional solidarity has already been set in motion to stand alongside the wife and three children of Bernard Boateng, the 45-year-old from Vajont who passed away on Wednesday after contracting the Coronavirus. Born in Accra, the capital of Ghana, he celebrated his birthday on 17 May. After a few days, the 45-year-old and his family were placed in quarantine because they were positive.
The outbreak was reported to the Municipality, whose mayor Lavinia Corona immediately activated the legal protocols. No one would have expected the clinical picture to worsen and the subsequent death, which occurred at the Santa Maria della Misericordia hospital in Udine where Boateng had been hospitalized. The 45-year-old was not affected by any previous pathology that could have amplified the infection to be lethal. The funeral has not yet been set: it is likely that the body will be repatriated to Ghana to be buried in the country of origin. In the meantime, in Vajont and in the entire district, there is a solidarity contest to help his wife and three young children.
From a professional point of view, the first citizen is interested in psychological support for people affected by grief and painful experiences. Yesterday, Corona did not want to enter into the merits of the situation, limiting itself to recalling how “in cases of this kind, minors must be protected and protected at all costs”. The apparatus of social assistance was also activated “but on tiptoe and asking permission, because first the needs of the relatives must be understood and the right communication with them must be established”, as the mayor pointed out.
Boateng had been living in Vajont for some years and was employed as a worker in a company in the Maniago area. He had also served for a fellow countryman who has settled permanently in the area and who has taken over a wood processing company. Although still little known in the community, the 45-year-old and his family have been described as respectful and well integrated. Yesterday, dozens of messages of condolence and closeness to the family appeared on social networks, in which the consternation for the loss of the relative was highlighted. This is the fourth confirmed death from Coronavirus among Vajont residents.
