US President Joe Biden signed an executive order to ban American companies and individuals from investing in 59 Chinese companies that have close ties to the China military. Biden’s executive order takes up and expands an order from his predecessor, Donald Trump, and this shows that there is considerable continuity in the US administration’s policies towards China for now.
Among the companies affected by the investment ban there are some already included by Trump, such as the technology company Huawei and the three big Chinese telephone companies (China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecommunications). There are also several companies active in the defense sector. Biden’s list also includes Hikvision, a company that produces surveillance cameras and facial recognition technologies: according to several experts, its products have been used for the repression of Uighurs in the Xinjiang region.
