Messina’s name has gone all the way to space. In the main asteroid belt, a region of our solar system between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, which contains the largest concentration of asteroids in the solar system, there is an asteroid named with the name of the city of the Strait. Let’s talk about “1949 Messina”. This asteroid was discovered in July 1936 by the South African astronomer Cyril V. Jackson. The astronomer, during his study trips, also stayed for several days in the city of Messina, admiring the scenic beauty and the great warmth of its inhabitants.
Just after this short stay in Messina Jackson decided to dedicate one of the first asteroids discovered along the main belt to the city of the Strait, between Mars and Jupiter. Besides “1949 Messina” Jackson he managed to discover many other asteroids and even comets, including periodic objects 47P/Ashbrook-Jackson
e 58P/Jackson-Neujmin. The asteroid“1949 Messina” has an orbit characterized by a semi-major axis equal to 2.3833717 UA and from an eccentricity of 0,2297831, inclined of 4,65718° with respect to the ecliptic. The asteroid does not belong to the category of those considered “dangerous”, maintaining its orbit within the main belt, between Mars and Jupiter.
