Piedmont, Lombardy, Veneto. Surprisingly, Sicily and Campania also struggled with vaccinations for the 60s, especially with AstraZeneca inoculations. The trend is still embryonic, but the first day of testing on the reservations of the youngest denotes a good response to the vaccination campaign. The premise: not a reliable figure on a national basis. There are too many regions that have not yet opened membership, so calculating herd immunity projections – to be achieved in September – risks being premature and misleading. But in those in which we started yesterday, the adhesion rate is satisfactory.

First trend: the Northern regions – those where the pandemic He’s beaten harder with hospitalizations and deaths – they’re meeting beyond the best of expectations. There is probably one collective psychological dimension which leads families to want to immediately secure even the youngest ones to block the transmissibility index. Lombardy recorded 473,237 bookings on the Poste platform: 272,582 between 20 and 29, 145,650 between 16 and 20, 54,918 between 12 and 15, plus some under 12 with frailty. More than 25% of the total audience (1.75 million) in less than 24 hours, considering the approximately 313 thousand already vaccinated between fragile and open days. In Piedmont a similar proportion with respect to the audience: 118 thousand adhesions since yesterday in the 16-29 age bracket out of an audience of 561 thousand. Net of 12-15 years, group not yet unlocked.

Vaccinations for the very young: why and how

Veneto also did well: as of yesterday, 284,000 members in the 12-29 year bracket: over 30% in one day. Sicily – lagging behind the over 80s with the lowest coverage rate with Calabria – has recorded over 120,000 bookings between the ages of 16 and 39. In Campania 188,965 members aged 12 to 39, of which 45,333 between the ages of 12 and 19 and about 77 thousand between the ages of 20 and 29: one of the few regions to open even to the youngest after the Aifa approval. Calabria recorded 60,000 appointments in four hours, from 3pm to 7pm yesterday, from 12 to 39 years old. Abruzzo 71 thousand bookings aged 12 and over, over a quarter of the total. In Umbria between the ages of 16 and 29, 19 thousand adhesions. In the autonomous province of Bolzano, the numbers are more contained: 500 booked out of 11,131 entitled to between 16 and 18 years. Tepid participation, but we are talking about absolute figures that are not so relevant in the national scenario.

All other regions will still wait a few days or weeks to start membership. Commissioner Francesco Figliuolo has given the green light since yesterday. But this is a non-peremptory indication. Each region has decision-making autonomy. Many prefer to first increase the coverage of the 40-49 and 50-59 age groups who have now entered the heart of the campaign. Lazio, Tuscany, Emilia Romagna, Liguria, Puglia – not without some polemical vein – are waiting to know from Figliuolo how many doses of Pfizer will be destined to the youngest, especially from 12 to 15 years only vaccine allowed. Yesterday there were several discussions with the commissioner to understand the planning. Realistically, by mid-June all reservations will also open to 12-year-olds after Figliuolo’s reassurances on the supply of the German-American preparation. Marche, Molise, Sardinia and Basilicata unlock them today. It will take an average of twenty days at least to start with the bites.
