Milan – They pop up just after sunset. Hundreds of giant cockroaches. “They climb the walls, invade the windowsills, enter the house. We are desperate.” The voice is that of Fabiola Proietto, thirty-six, who shivers when she has to visit her mother and her brothers in the Aler apartment where they live, in via Dei Cinquecento 8, in the Corvetto district. “And it happens every day. We can’t take it anymore.”

She is the spokesperson for family members and other tenants of the building. “I wrote to Aler and to the hygiene department of the Health Protection Agency: we need a de-lactization”. The woman, who grew up in that house, explains that the problem has existed for years. “But before it was bearable. In the summer, with the heat, it manifested itself. But now it is really an intolerable invasion. My family is on the ground floor, therefore easily accessible by insects, and must keep the windows closed in the evening and night. Despite this the cockroaches enter the house. We spread the poison and in the morning we find an extermination: all dead in the yard and on the sidewalk. There are hundreds of them. I have to do the slalom when I take my 3 year old daughter to my mother and when I go to pick it up in the evening, after work. It seems to me to play naval battle: I have to try to ‘touch’ the right box so as not to run into a black tangle. On the memory of my mobile I have kept many photos, which I have taken or that they were sent to me, but I hardly ever open them because they disgust me. “

Where did the insects come from? According to the tenants, from the cellars which are at an underground level. But also from a small garden, always inside the Aler building, which according to what they explain is always closed, not even accessible to the inhabitants. “The bedrooms overlook this garden – adds the 36-year-old – not only my family but also other tenants have to make house inspections in the evening, to check that there are no cockroaches. It’s a nightmare, which adds to the ‘general neglect of the neighborhood: after the Tuesday market, rotten fruit and dirt remain on the street. And this too surely attracts cockroaches. I wrote two days ago to Aler and the Health Protection Agency: I am confident in a quick response ” .
