It has sporting forms

The new Audi Q5 Sportback it is the coupé version of the popular German SUV, compared to which it costs between 1,800 and 3,000 euros more. The dimensions are almost identical (the car is longer than 1 cm) and even the line in the front and part of the side do not change. The tail, on the other hand, is completely new, acquiring a sporty character, with a slender silhouette, thanks to the arched roof that descends “softly” towards the tailgate, and the very sloping rear window (shame about the lights “drowned” in the bumper rear: they are in a delicate position, at risk of “touching” in parking lots). Behind, the roof spoiler and the fake extractor in the bumper underline the dynamic aspect of the car, also emphasized by the thin horizontal headlights, which make it appear even wider and lower.

And for the purpose of headlights, it should be noted that on the’Audi Q5 Sportback (as for the “normal” Q5) are also available with oled technology (at 1,440 euros). Each oled headlight (like some smartphone and TV screens) is made up of very thin diodes in organic material that emit intense light, individually adjustable in intensity. The diodes give rise to 18 light segments, which can be switched on and off selectively to create plays of light: when the car is stationary, for example, they create a light sequence to welcome or goodbye passengers. Thanks to this technology, they can also emit a proximity signal: that is, when you are not driving, if a person or a vehicle approaches within two meters, all segments light up. As soon as the car is moving again, the original lighting is restored.

Plenty of room for passengers, a little less for luggage

The interiors of theAudi Q5 Sportback, welcoming and refined and quite spacious even behind. The style is rigorous, but not lacking in elegance, and due to the effect of the two-level dashboard, with the horizontal chrome strip (or in other materials, including carbon, € 1,580, ash wood, € 260 and walnut € 580) that crosses it, it seems even larger visually than it actually is. But what is most striking are the two large color displays, the 12.3 “one in the virtual dashboard, which shows the navigator maps in full screen and also gives information on the energy flows between the petrol engine, the batteries, the electric unit and the wheels, and the 10.1 “center dashboard unit of the MIB3 multimedia system: the latter, facing the driver, is rich in functions and responsive to the touch, and can only be controlled from the touch display (not there is more, in fact, the knob of the old Q5 on the central tunnel). The MIB3 is connected to the internet and offers several services provided by the house via the web connection.

Among these, the Car-to-X, which exploits information shared with other Audi, on parking, danger warnings or speed limits, or connects to urban infrastructures (in cities where it is already active), to receive information from compatible traffic light systems and suggest to the driver the speed to keep in order to switch to the green at the next intersection. Practical the sliding sofa, which allows you to give more space to passengers or luggage. The trunk has a regular shape, but in this rechargeable hybrid version it loses 55 liters (from 510 to 455) compared to those with the heat engine only due to the 17.9 kWh (14.4 effective) lithium-ion batteries placed under the loading floor.

4×4 drive and two engines for a total of 367 HP

In terms of mechanics, theAudi Q5 Sportback 55 TFSI and maintains the same plug-in hybrid layout of the “sister” Q5, with the 265 bhp 2.0 turbo petrol engine combined with an electric motor and the S tronic seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, for a combined power of 367 bhp. The four-wheel drive system is the one called quattro Ultra, which favors front-wheel drive, to consume and pollute less, sending torque to the rear wheels, via the crankshaft, only when the front ones lose grip. There are four driving programs: “EV”, “Auto”, “Battery hold” and “Battery charge” which respectively give priority to electric drive, automatic hybrid mode, energy saving for the benefit of a subsequent travel phase or when the battery is recharged. With the “Battery charge” function, the heat engine not only transmits motion to the wheels, but also contributes to the activation of the electric motor in the regenerative phase. The latter, acting as an alternator, allows the home to recover about 1% of charge for each kilometer traveled until the 80% energy threshold is reached. Under normal driving conditions, the electric motor takes care of mild decelerations, the most frequent in everyday driving, while medium-intensity braking is performed with traditional brakes.

In box it recharges to 100% in 8 hours

The charging system of theAudi Q5 Sportback 55 TFSI and, as standard, it can also be activated with a smartphone and consists of a control unit, a vehicle connection cable (4.5 meters long) and two different power cables with connectors for domestic and industrial sockets. On request, you can buy a connector and a cable for public stations (400 euros). The maximum charging power accepted by the system is 7.4 kW in alternating current (AC). The house says that from a wallbox or column (230V and 32A), it is possible to restore the electric range of the car to 100% in 2 and a half hours, while relying on a common domestic socket it takes just over 8 hours. A practical tool to manage the car remotely is represented by the myAudi app which transfers the Audi connect services to the smartphone and allows both to check the battery status and to manage the pre-air conditioning (useful for heating the passenger compartment in winter or cooling it down). summer before getting on the car, without penalizing the autonomy of the “batteries”).

For public recharging, the house offers a program, called Audi e-tron Charging Service, which guarantees the use of a network of columns (over 204,000) in 26 European countries with a single contract and a single card. And for the private wallboxes, in collaboration with the partner Alpiq and AGN Energia, Audi has provided an “all inclusive” package which includes a free inspection of the technicians in the box, a quote for the installation of the Audi charging system, as well as access to a flat rate called easy home charging, offered at 110 euros per month (excluding VAT and taxes) for a supply of energy from renewable sources up to 5,000 kWh in 12 months. According to the house, with a daily expense of € 4.40 it is possible to recharge the car in full, all year round.

He has couple to sell

Relaxing at low speed, even with the 2.0 running (very little noisy and almost free from vibrations), theAudi Q5 Sportback 55 TFSI and has a sporty sprint when you put your foot on the accelerator and offers an engaging drive, thanks to the precise steering and consistent suspension (a bit hard, however, on the holes, especially with the 21 “rims of the car in trial, from € 970). In particular, if you select the Dynamic program, the sportiest (the others are Efficiency to reduce fuel consumption, Comfort, Auto, and Individual, customizable, as well as Off-road for off-road), you can hear all the 367 HP and 500 Nm of maximum torque provided by the hybrid system. And driving becomes satisfying, especially if you can count on the air suspension (2,420 euros), which make the car more responsive and smooth road bumps better. But this hybrid with a sporty soul knows how to give satisfaction even when you go “for a walk”, above all by taking advantage of the electric autonomy, which allows you to travel in silence, gently. With the 14.4 kWh battery the house promises 59 km with zero emissions, a distance that can allow you to go to work every day without using the heat engine (as long as you keep the accumulators always well charged, otherwise you lose the real ones benefits of plug-in hybrid technology).

Lively yes, but in electric she knows how to charm you

And we must admit that driving through the magnificent vineyards of the Langhe (where the test took place), tackling the climbs and descents always in electric mode, one appreciates even more the quiet running of theAudi Q5 Sportback 55 TFSI e, which invites you to put yourself to the test by aiming for maximum energy savings. So much so as to be able to extend the autonomy indicated on the on-board computer at the start. The 46 km promised at the beginning, in fact, we managed to overcome them easily, traveling with zero emissions for a good 60 km, with careful, but not exasperated, driving, only by exploiting the remarkable efficiency of the hybrid system. A refined technology, that of the new Audi Q5 Sportback 55 TFSI e, which showed a great capacity for energy recovery in slowdowns and descents (an evident improvement over the first generation of the Q5 plug-in hybrid, which needed decelerations greater or much longer descents to regenerate the battery to a lesser extent). Only in the final stretch of the freeway, at 130 km / h (the 2.0 turns on once the 135 hours have passed), the consumption of batteries has increased, as is natural, but without excess.

Also from 299 hp

To garage one 55 TFSI and from 367 hp you have to spend 74,100 euros for the S line and 76,200 for the S line plus. But there is also the less powerful 50 TFSI e, which has 299 HP and less complete equipment, on the list for 62,750 euros.

In our opinion

> Finishes. The interiors, made with quality materials, refined and robust, are treated in detail. “Technological” the virtual instrumentation of 12.3 ”and the multimedia system is valid.
> Guide. Precise steering, ready robotic gearbox, powerful braking and high road holding make it an easy to drive, safe and fun car.
> Hybrid system. At low speed it is sweet, but thanks to the combined action of the 2.0 turbo and the electric unit, it is always able to offer a powerful and immediate response. Good autonomy in electric.

> Baule. It is not large (it loses 55 liters compared to that of the other versions) and when the backrest is folded down the bottom is not perfectly flat.
> Comfort on the bumpy. The sports suspension is standard and on the holes the response of the shock absorbers is a bit abrupt, especially with the 21 ”rims and the lowered tires of the car being tested.
> Rear lights. Those in the bumper are in a delicate position, which exposes them to parking bumps.
