Former Defense Minister Elizabeth Trenta announced his farewell to the M5s. “I leave the 5 Stars, more precisely this Movement,” he wrote on Facebook. “I leave with so much pain but without the regret of not having believed it and not having tried it until the end “. Just the former holder of the defense department during the Lega-M5s government, wanted by Luigi Di Maio, has repeatedly claimed his membership in the Movement as an activist. Now, however, despite Giuseppe Conte’s refoundation project, he has decided to abandon the 5 stars accusing them of poor democracy. “This is no longer the house of the transparency, of democracy from below, of participation and consistency with values that are and will remain mine anyway. I leave because the courage to go against, when necessary, has been overshadowed by personalities, because too many compromises and reversals are the denial of the dreams of those who believed in us ”.
And again in the post on Facebook, Trenta turned to the foreign minister and former political leader: “Dear Luigi I will always be grateful to you for having wanted me as Minister of Defense, giving me a great and unique opportunity ”, reads the post. “I proudly felt part of your team. We had to and wanted to change the country and instead, among too many fears, the Movement has changed ”, he said. “For my part, and you know it well, I have never given in on our essential values even when some have turned against me trying to make me angry. The States General had been promised a turning point, a great participatory reflection to restart and instead, not to admit that the base is elsewhere, everything quickly ended up in a drawer ”. Trenta also announced that it will continue to engage in politics. “I’m leaving but I’m not leaving politics, I’m going down here, just to start over! And wherever I go, I will take with me the values that made me join the Movement and that today force me to leave it to realize them ”.
Trenta is captain of the selected reserve of the administrative body and commissioner of the Army. Before becoming minister she was deputy director of the master’s degree in Intelligence and Security at Link Campus University and had collaborations with the Military Center for Strategic Studies. In November 2019 she had ended up at the center of the controversy because, although she had not been Minister of Defense for two months, she had remained in the service house which had been reassigned to her husband, a major in the army who, according to the prosecution, should not enjoy that accommodation by position and degree held. In January 2020, the former minister decided to move and in January 2021 the investigation of the military prosecutor into the case was closed.
