The data from the first national study on the impact of Covid-19 vaccination by the Higher Institute of Health and the Ministry of Health are excellent. From the 35 days of the start of the vaccination cycle there is an 80% reduction in infections, 90% of hospitalizations and 95% of deaths. These effects – it is specified – are similar in both men and women and in people of different age groups. Numbers that, explains the president of the ISS, Silvio Brusaferro, “confirm the effectiveness of vaccinations and the vaccination campaign, and the need to quickly reach high coverage in the entire population to get out of the emergency thanks to this fundamental tool”.

The report starts from 27 December 2020 (starting day of the vaccination campaign in Italy) to 3 May 2021, relating to 13.7 million people vaccinated. The data shows that 95% of people vaccinated with Comirnaty (Pfizer) or Moderna completed the vaccination course, receiving two doses within the times indicated by the vaccination schedule, while for the AstraZeneca vaccine none of the people included in the study had received the full course. In Italy, however, according to a government report, there are still just over two million citizens over 70 who have not yet received the first dose of the vaccine. In particular, those over eighty still unvaccinated are 519,666 (1’11.49%), while among citizens between 70 and 79 years old 1,495,947 (24.84%). In some regions, in the meantime, in addition to the traditional campaign, the «Open Day» formula is also continuing. This weekend in Lazio over 40s can get vaccinated with AstraZeneca via virtual booking in 21 hubs set up by the Region. The initiative was very successful and the councilor for health, Alessio D’Amato, has already announced an open day for the over 30s next weekend.

The governor of Lombardy, Attilio Fontana, instead expressed himself on the case of the Italian ReiThera serum, against which the Court of Auditors blocked the funds, putting Phase 3 of the trial at risk. “I think when you have to participate in a war you should be a little more flexible. I realize that there are legal reasons, but I am convinced that it would be appropriate for us to be able to be autonomous in the manufacture of vaccines, “said the president of Lombardy. Meanwhile, with the arrival of summer, the Minister of Tourism, Massimo Garavaglia, pushes for the green light to the second dose of vaccine even outside his own region, in order not to penalize the sector. “It is a complex problem but I hope that a solution can be found with General Figliuolo”, his hope. Meanwhile, the number of new Covid cases in Italy is still decreasing. Yesterday there were 7,567 against 8,085 the day before. There were 298,186 swabs, an increase of 11,160 and the positivity rate dropped to 2.5% (from 2.8%). The deaths are 182 (Friday 201), for a total of 123,927 victims since the beginning of the epidemic. Intensive care patients are 1,860 (-33), with 99 admissions that day (against 81), while ordinary hospitalizations fell by 558 and yesterday they were 13,050.
