José Mourinho will be the Roma manager from the end of the current season. The company announced that it has reached an agreement with the Portuguese manager that will tie him to the team until 2024.
The announcement of the engagement of Mourinho, one of the most successful and charismatic coaches of the last twenty years, comes within hours of the one with which it was made official that the current coach Paulo Fonseca would leave his position at the end of the season. Mourinho is 58 years old and in the last two seasons he had coached Tottenham in England, but obtained disappointing results: he was sacked a few weeks ago. In his career he has coached Porto, Chelsea, Real Madrid, Manchester United and Inter, which he had led to triplet – Scudetto, Champions League and Coppa Italia – in 2010.
Commenting on his arrival at Roma, Mourinho said that «the incredible passion of the Roma fans convinced me to accept the job and I can’t wait to start next season. At the same time, I wish Paulo Fonseca the best of luck and ask the media to understand that I will only make statements in due course. Daje Roma! ».
In addition to trophies won with Inter, in his career Mourinho has won another Champions League and UEFA Cup with Porto, three English championships with Chelsea, and a Spanish championship with Real Madrid. He is known for a “reactive” style of play, which is based mainly on defensive compactness, on waiting for the opponent and on counterattacks, and for a very charismatic, often ironic and even more often judged arrogant communicative approach. Among Inter fans, Mourninho is still widely remembered and celebrated for triplet, and already comments on how his arrival in Italy will animate the already notoriously lively and controversial football debate. There is also curiosity about how he will manage the role of Roma coach on a communicative and personal level, a position traditionally subjected to great pressure from the fans.
