The large signs on the windows leave no room for doubt: the Feltrinelli bookcase, also known as «Red» in via Tomacelli has closed definitively. It had been opened only 4 years ago, and with its beautiful terrace it had hosted hundreds and hundreds of events: it was called, in fact, «Read Eat Dream», and was considered a space dedicated not only to culture but also al high quality food. Beyond 500 square meters of sale, inaugurated on October 19 of 2017, the bookshop closed just over a week ago: goodbye to art and children’s books, to the rich space dedicated to non-fiction.
And thanks to the bistro and the large open space, with over 100 seats, it had been able to accommodate hundreds of events, meetings, presentations, readings. But the impossibility of organizing them for over a year due to the pandemic, and the simultaneous closure of the restaurant, led to the decision to close a because of the costs. I employees were relocated in the other points of the chain. But only a year ago they had been Feltrinelli International closed, of via Vittorio Emanuele Orlando, and the Feltrinelli of via Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, at the corner with Piazza Cavour. For the center of Rome it is a serious loss, and another hard blow for bookstores: a meeting known and appreciated by citizens and tourists is missing. Not to mention that in the last two years the capital has also seen the closure of Traveler’s Library, in Via del Pellegrino, and the Coliseum library, in via del Teatro Valle, a real temple for bibliophiles. The Red Feltrinelli formula (Read eat dream) at the moment remains only a Valmontone outlet.
