MotoGP GP Spain (Jerez) 2021, Marquez after the crash: ‘I’m alive thanks to the air fence’

Marquez still down, a Jerez, in the same “Angel Nieto” circuit in which he fell and suffered the rupture of the humerus of his right arm, on 19 July 2020, the beginning of his ordeal. The Honda rider slipped into the Free Practice 3 at Turn 7: his bike was practically destroyed, while he got up and went back to the garage. After the checks at the medical center and in the hospital he returned to the track for qualifying for the Spanish GP: in the race he will start from 14th position. At the end of the day, his words: “I’m alive thanks to the air fences (the inflatable protections positioned to cushion any impacts against the barriers, ed), we know that the bikes are now getting stronger and the risks can increase, but today we could also see the great work of the Safety Comission“.

Marquez: “I chose the worst corner to crash …”

Marquez’s day: from his fall to 14th place

A nasty fright for Marquez, who nevertheless does not lose his smile: “Sooner or later I knew the fall was coming – he continues – I chose the worst corner to crash, one of the fastest points on the circuit. But the important thing is that it is here, I was a little disoriented, but the arm is okay and the most important thing is that now I feel good physically. More than anything else, the crash conditioned the qualification: I chose the soft front tire thinking about that corner and not about the feeling with the bike. I’m not happy with my grid position, but I remain confident for the race“.
