The latest hoax on the Quirinale: the photocopy government appears to send Draghi to the Hill

The last magic formula that is put around, to reassure parliamentary and ministerial troops, is that of the “Dragons without Dragons government”, or “photocopy government”. According to which only one box would change (that of Palazzo Chigi, with the premier moving to the Colle), and everything else would remain calmly motionless.

The problem, apart from the name of the new prime minister (here the schools of thought diverge: a “technician” like Cartabia or Franco, or a politician like Franceschini, Giorgetti or even Di Maio?), Is substantive: a photocopy of what? After what happened before, during and after the Council of Ministers which partially introduced the vaccination obligation, it is quite clear that the government of very large unity is no longer there. The majority is disintegrating, between the melonian anxieties of a Matteo Salvini who yearns for the golden idleness of the opposition and the chaotic and farcical implosion of the Five Stars of (so to speak) Giuseppe Conte. Where the twists and turns with increasingly unlikely candidacies are no longer counted (yesterday even Liliana Segre was brought up, who for months said she didn’t want to know).

Therefore, the very premises of Mario Draghi’s stay at Palazzo Chigi are dissolving, under the pressure of the opposing and confused survival strategies of the very fragile parties of a sui generis coalition. Thus, the main argument – in good or bad faith – used by those who are against the rise of the current Prime Minister at the Quirinale risks falling: “Draghi must stay in his place because he is the only one who can hold this majority together “. It is indeed very difficult to imagine that, with Salvini fleeing from government responsibilities in the hope of being able to do a year of electoral campaign hands-free, Draghi would lend himself to being the premier of an “Ursula coalition” hostage to the moods of a headless M5s and rapidly regressing towards novax, populist and Trumpist origins.

The variable (terrifying for the big electors) of early voting can therefore become completely independent of Draghi’s candidacy at the Colle. According to Matteo Renzi, the only political leader to openly put his feet in the plate, it is a variable longed for by various party leaders, potential supporters of the Draghi candidacy: Giorgia Meloni, who “has started the decline in the polls” and is in a hurry to make money; Giuseppe Conte, aware that “Di Maio is only waiting for the administrative elections in the spring to make his shoes”, and Enrico Letta, that “if you don’t vote you have to go to the congress and win the primary, an exercise in which he doesn’t have much experience”. So, the former prime minister cuts short, whoever wants to send Draghi (“who would be a perfect president of the Republic”) to the Quirinale, must start working hard to trace the path: “Not only a presidential majority must be built” to elect him, but also «a political majority for the post-government. And to do this you need a political initiative, not a random tweet, ”Renzi says (with treacherous reference to the anti-nuclear utterances of the Pd leader) to Corriere della Sera. Even an old navigator of the parliamentary corridors like Bruno Tabacci, underlining that Silvio Berlusconi “has returned to the center of the scene” and will be “decisive in electing the President of the Republic”, pulls the ears of the leaders of the main parties: “They are all afraid of doing the first move “, he says, urging Letta and Salvini to” talk to each other “.
