There are 12 days left in Italy for the administration of the Covid vaccine for children aged 5 to 11, scheduled for next December 16, but we are already looking at the immunization of the smallest range, from 0 to 5 years. And probably the possibility of leaving in first half of next year, as hypothesized by the president of Aifa and member of the Cts, Giorgio Palù. «Moderna and Pfizer are already experimenting with children, but I think it will be a matter of a few months. I am not a diviner but it is likely »that in the first half of 2022 the vaccination for the 0-5 age group will arrive, he says responding to a solicitation during Live In Courmayeur on Sky Tg24.

Infections have increased with the Delta variant for the younger groups. “The population from 0 to 11 years – explains Palù – is the one that has 300 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants per week, the highest incidence of infection, and is also high from 0 to 3”. «Today – continues Palù – children are hospitalized to the extent that is just under 1%. It was not so previously with the variants up to Alfa ». And on the possible risks of vaccines for the 5-11 age group Palù reassures: “Three thousand children tested is more than those tested for the pertussis vaccine”. In the United States, «4 million and 300 thousand children have been vaccinated. An audience higher than that of children who potentially should be vaccinated in Italy from 5 to 11 years», and the US Scientific Society of Pediatrics «did not report any cases of serious adverse reactions in these children. I also remember that the administration of the ancti-Covid vaccine to children is one third of the dose of that administered to adolescents».
The ISS: one out of two cases is of school age
The Higher Institute of Health also highlights the Covid trend in school age in its extended weekly monitoring report. In the last week, the trend observed in the previous seven days is confirmed: 51% of all cases detected in school age (40,529 for the period 15-28 November) were diagnosed in the 6-11 year range, 33% in the 12-19 year olds and only 11% and 5% between 3 and 5 and under 3 years respectively.
The ISS also shows an increase in the hospitalization rate in the 3-year group (just over 2 hospitalizations per 100,000 inhabitants) in the last few weeks, while in the other age groups it is stable. From the beginning of the epidemic at 12 noon on 1 December 2021, 850,574 confirmed cases of which 35 died were reported to the Covid integrated surveillance system in the population 0-19 years old. While in general on the efficacy of vaccines, the ISS highlights that for an unvaccinated person the risk compared to one vaccinated for less than 5 months is 10 times greater than hospitalization, 16 times greater than intensive care, 9 times greater than death.
The effectiveness in preventing infections, both with or without symptoms, decreases from 75% to 44%. The efficacy against severe disease remains high (93% with vaccination for less than 5 months and 85% with a complete course for more than five months compared to non-vaccinated people). «Real data tells us that the current vaccine, designed on a virus that circulated more than two years ago, is still 85 to 90 percent effective in protecting us from hospitalization for serious illness and death. This is crucial», concludes Palù, according to which on the Omicron variant «it takes some time to do the right experiments».
