Over 60 and not vaccinated: this is the identikit of those who end up in intensive care due to Covid. This is what emerges from the study on the data concerning the period from 15 October to 14 November carried out by the Higher Institute of Health which has put pen to paper an important data: at a time when infections are growing (16,632 in the last 24 hours to which other 75 deaths) and the average Rt is above the epidemic threshold, in the last 30 days in Italy there has been a higher incidence of diagnosed cases among those who have not yet vaccinated. Among the “No-vax” the risk of ending up in hospital is “about seven times higher than in vaccinated with a full course less than five months (39 hospitalizations per 100,000) and six times higher than in vaccinated with a full course over five months (43 hospitalizations per 100,000). The same goes for deaths: the death rate in the unvaccinated (99.5 per 100,000) is about nine times higher than in those vaccinated with a full course for over five months (12 per 100,000) and seven times higher than in those vaccinated with full cycle within five months (14 per 100,000).
Between 15 October and 14 November, 546 unvaccinated people were admitted to intensive care (compared to 132 vaccinated with a full course within 5 months). Of these, 165 in the 40-59 age group (12 among the vaccinated) and 318 in the 60-79 age group (against 104 vaccinated). Meanwhile, the report points out, no vaccinated people under 40 have been hospitalized in intensive care. The ISS reiterates that “after five months from the completion of the vaccination cycle, the effectiveness of the vaccine in preventing the disease, both in the symptomatic and asymptomatic form, drops from 75% to 44%”. However, the ISS assures, the effectiveness in preventing cases of severe disease “remains high”: for vaccinated with a complete cycle for less than five months it is equal to 93% compared to unvaccinated, while it is equal to 85% for those who have been vaccinated with a full course for more than five months compared to those who have not been vaccinated. In the last three weeks, explains the ISS, “an increase in the weekly incidence in all age groups” has been observed. Since the second decade of October, there has been an increase in the incidence in the 0-9 and 10-19 age groups. A figure – yet to be consolidated – which in the last week was between 200 and 250 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants. In the 40-49 age group, the incidence rises to values between 150 and 200 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants. Only in the age groups over 70 in the last week the incidence remains between 50 and 100 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants.
As regards the variation in the incidence at 7 and 14 days, an increase in covid diagnoses was recorded in the under 19s, a figure “probably also due to the greater screening activity in schools”. In the meantime, 9 cases of Omicron variant have been sequenced in our country, 7 of the cluster related to the index patient, one in the province of Bolzano and one in Veneto. In addition, in view of the entry into force of the decree introducing the “super Green pass” starting from 6 December, the Ministry of Health has updated the App for verifying green certificates: thanks to the new version there is now the possibility to select the type of verification, “basic” or “reinforced”. In the “basic” version, green passes issued after vaccination, recovery or a negative result of the tampon will be recognized. In the “enhanced” version, however, only the codes of vaccinated and cured will be read. Meanwhile, on Friday a new record was recorded for Green passes downloaded: 1,240,703.
