Over 3 million cases in South Africa
The infections from Covid-19 in South Africa have exceeded the record of three million while a new wave led by the Omicron variant is spreading in various areas of the country. The government today reported 16,055 new cases in 24 hours, bringing the total of infections detected in the laboratory to 3,004,203. “This increase represents a positive rate of 24.3 percent,” the government-run National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) said in the daily update. Most of the new cases reported today, 72%, were detected in the province of Gauteng, the most populous of the country’s provinces. Gauteng, which is home to the capital Pretoria and the country’s economic and financial center, Johannesburg, has been confirmed as the epicenter of the new variant since Omicron was first taken over there last week.
Moratti (Lombardy), tampons also to the no-vax, are necessary
Unlike what Veneto will do, as announced by its president Luca Zaia, Lombardy “will continue to swab” even the no-vax, because they are necessary to be able to sequence the virus. This was reported in an interview with La Stampa by the Lombard councilor for Welfare Letizia Moratti who specified: “We sequence all the positive ones in search of variants”. The numbers of contagion in the rest of Europe are “worrying” and also in Lombardy the infections are increasing. “For this reason we expect a worsening of the situation”, declares the vice president of the Region according to which “more restrictive measures” are needed starting from the “obligation to wear a mask outdoors, throughout Italy, regardless of the gatherings”. In any case, Moratti expects that Christmas “will certainly be more peaceful than last year”, and this “thanks to vaccines”. Moratti is not due to the vaccination obligation. “I prefer to convince rather than oblige – he says – and, as mentioned, the numbers prove us right”.

Bolsonaro investigated for fake news after shocking words on vaccines and AIDS
New troubles for Jair Bolsonaro, accused of false declarations on the coronavirus pandemic. A Supreme Court judge has ordered an investigation into allegations by the Brazilian president, which date back to last October, in which Bolsonaro made a link between vaccination against Covid-19 and AIDS live on social media. Bolsonaro has downplayed the risks of Covid-19 from the start of the pandemic. According to official data, more than 22 million people in Brazil have contracted the coronavirus and over 615,000 deaths related to Covid-19 have been recorded in the country.
