The “hero” firefighter is in need, and the 20-year-old girl who saved him a few months ago after falling into an artesian well comes to his rescue.
The story that comes from Campania is a story of reversed roles and of great humanity.
Francesco Di Somma, firefighter of the provincial command of Caserta, last April 5 – Easter Monday – rose to the headlines for having saved a 20-year-old fall in an artesian well in Casaluce, in the Caserta area.
After that gesture, however, the life of the man, 42 years old married with two children, took an unexpected, tragic turn. Francesco was diagnosed with a very rare blood disorder, parasostic haemoglubinuria. She needs weekly transfusions pending the bone marrow transplant. Brother Yari has launched an appeal to donate blood and one of the first to respond is her, Carla.
The same Carla who on Easter Monday 2021 fell into an artesian well after the collapse of an iron grate. Francesco, who is part of the Speleo Alpino fluviale nucleus, lowered himself into the well with a harness and ad hoc equipment and pulled her out, saving her life.
After a few weeks, from normal blood tests, Francesco discovered that he had a very low number of platelets, so his ordeal began.
Brother Yari talks about it like this: “Until before the summer Francesco, a big man of almost two meters was fine; then from a simple blood test we found that he had decreased platelets. He tried to correct something in his lifestyle but the platelets kept going down. So we went to many hospitals to understand what he had, and at the Cardarelli in Naples, at the hematology department headed by doctor Felicetto Ferrara, they diagnosed this very rare pathology “.
Francesco has few platelets and red blood cells, so he cannot work because he runs the risk of causing injuries that could lead to lethal bleeding – he has been sick for a month – but at the same time, having a reduced immune system, he cannot get sick so he has to stay home and cannot be hospitalized. He also needs blood and platelet transfusions once or twice a week.
