No vax, what are they risking? Mortality and intensive care data in Emilia Romagna

Bologna, 29 November 2021 – The latest report of the health and social agency of the Emilia Romagna Region speaks clearly: the effectiveness of anti Covid vaccines continues to be very high, especially in preventing hospital admissions, intensive care and deaths. The report indeed analyzed the incidence of Covid-19 and its consequences on the territory in the weeks included from 21 October to 17 November.

The focus Regions colors today: who changes. Covid data from Emilia Romagna

In full-cycle vaccinated people, the incidence of infections involving hospitalization in intensive care remains low throughout the period, while this does not happen for the unvaccinated, where it continues to be very high: in the last 4 weeks the risk – standardized by age and class of clinical frailty / care complexity – for the unvaccinated it is 2.8 times greater to become infected than for the vaccinated; 4.5 times greater than being hospitalized and 10.9 times greater than ICU hospitalization.

Despite a slight reduction in the protection over the months, as of November 15, the average efficacy of the vaccine – compared to the monitoring of June 30 – in preventing infections is
in any case equal to 76.9% and 87.8% the coverage with respect to hospitalizations. Still very high protection against intensive care admissions (89.1%) and deaths (90.5%). In the
weeks examined, 123 deaths were recorded, 91 of which in the over 80 population; the remaining 32 occurred in the age group 40-59 (3) and in the age group 60-79 (29): the incidence of death in these last two age groups is 1.5 times higher in the unvaccinated than in the vaccinated.

“The data – says the regional councilor for health policies, Raffaele Donini – confirm once again that the vaccine makes a difference, and that unvaccinated people run a much greater risk of contracting the infection, of being hospitalized even in intensive care, and of dying. It is essential to get vaccinated and proceed quickly with the third dose “.

A specific focus of the Report it was done on the first two categories to start with the administration: health workers and elderly residents in residential structures who have completed their cycle. The efficacy of the vaccine remains high, settling on average around 88% with respect to infections and 97.95% with respect to hospital admissions, despite a slightly decreasing trend. Overall, the effectiveness is slightly reduced in people vaccinated for more than 6 months: 75% against infections, 80% of hospital admissions.

And in fact, if on the one hand the Report confirms how in the Emilia-Romagna population between the end of July and mid-November the incidence of infections is always higher among the unvaccinated, on the other hand it highlights how the trend has been increasing in the last period also among vaccinated: this can be explained with the decline, over time, of vaccine protection.

Same consideration for the incidence of hospital admissions, which is always significantly higher in the unvaccinated than in the vaccinated; also for the latter there is an increase in the last period, in part linked to the reduction of protection with the passing of the months, in part to the fact that among the vaccinated, mainly elderly people with comorbidities are hospitalized.
