Giglio Island (Grosseto), 27 November 2021 – Mouflons can breathe a sigh of relief. The killing of mammals on the island of Giglio has been stopped. This is the result of the confrontation and agreement between the president of the park of the Tuscan Archipelago, Giampiero Sammuri, and theMrs Michela Vittoria Brambilla, president of the parliamentary intergroup for animal rights and of the Italian league for the defense of animals and the environment, which have identified alternative solutions to safeguard the life and well-being of all mouflons present on the island. “The animals are safe – announces Brambilla -: this is what matters most. I am happy to have achieved this great result that puts an end to a situation that had touched the sensitivity not only of the inhabitants of Giglio but of all public opinion “.

At this point, the possible solutions under consideration are two: the ttransfer of animals to wildlife areas where they are guaranteed an adequate condition of well-being (among other things already identified by Sammuri and Brambilla), or stay of the mouflons on the island, but in a fenced area to limit their impact.

In recent days, the proposed resumption of the “eradication” of mouflons envisaged by the European project “Lets’go Giglio”, financed with 1.6 million euros by Italian and European taxpayers, had aroused strong protests: “Save Giglio” committee he had quickly collected thousands of signatures at the bottom of a petition asking to save the wild sheep population (only a few dozen) still present on the island, descending from the specimens that had been brought in the 1950s for a conservation project. The mobilization of many Gigliesi, animal rights activists and the Hon. Brambilla, who had announced the submission of a complaint to the Public Prosecutor’s Office and a complaint to the European Court of Auditors. “With the funds of the EU project, partly already spent to capture some mouflons and equip them with radio collars – the former minister pointed out – sterilization or transfers to wildlife areas could have been carried out. And in any case – he added, – do not be told that, in the 21st century, in order to remove a few dozen wild sheep from a small island, it is necessary to kill them “.

Last night, the direct confrontation between Sammuri and the parliamentarian of Fi was decisive, which ended with the decision to stop the killing (provision immediately given by Sammuri at the end of the meeting) and to save the lives of the mouflons by adopting alternative solutions. At this point it will be the park authority’s council to evaluate which of the two paths, shared with the animal rights parliamentarian, to adopt.

Yesterday, after the killing of four specimens, the animal rights activists of Aidaa they had sent a “complaint to the Prosecutor’s Office to ask for immediate checks as the cowardly thing would in fact be the system used to identify the animals to be killed”. This was reported by a note in which the association states that «in recent days the puppies who have been put on a radio collar have been captured; now these have been released and followed so when they rejoin their families the hunters have an easy life in identifying and killing the mouflons ». “It is a system worthy of professional killers – writes the Italian Association for the Defense of Animals and the Environment (Aidaa) in the same note – and we are clamoring for tourists to boycott both Giglio and Elba at Christmas, the next stage of the massacre” . The association sent a complaint to the Livorno prosecutor’s office to ask them to promptly verify what is happening on the island “where rumors are already circulating that indicate the carcasses of slaughtered animals ready to be slaughtered and served in restaurants”. Items on which the association “asks for careful verification”.
