On Tuesday, the surveillance magistrate of Viterbo ordered the early release of Rudy Guede, an Ivorian citizen and the only one convicted of the murder of the English student Meredith Kercher, which took place on November 1, 2007 in Perugia. Guede had been sentenced for complicity in murder with an abbreviated rite to 16 years in prison, almost all spent in the Viterbo prison.

Guede’s end of sentence was scheduled for January 4, 2022: Fabrizio Ballarini, Guede’s lawyer, said that the surveillance magistrate of Viterbo anticipated his release on the basis of article 54 of the penitentiary system, which provides early release when the prisoner actively participates in the re-education work provided for by the sentence.

Guede had graduated from prison. By virtue of his good conduct, at the end of September 2019 the Court of Rome had decided to give him semi-release, allowing him to collaborate with the Viterbo Criminological Studies Center for a few hours a day, returning to prison in the evening. For less than a year he had been entrusted to social services, and did daily voluntary work.
