“I’m broken,” the tearful father says over the phone. He would never have imagined, strengthened by his No Vax convictions, to find himself with his pregnant daughter sick of Covid and hospitalized in intensive care. A daughter between the fifth and sixth months of pregnancy, not vaccinated, who is now in danger of dying with the baby. Her husband also tested positive. “And right now – repeats the woman’s father, who can’t rest easy – they phoned me from the hospital to tell me that my wife, infected, has also gotten worse. I am destroyed”.
It is the story, again, of an entire family overwhelmed by the virus. The life of the 45-year-old woman, already a mother and now pregnant, a potentially risky pregnancy given her age, hangs on a respirator. He has pneumonia that doctors call “brutal”. She and her husband are convinced No Vax, to the point of having enrolled their first daughter in a preschool across the border in Slovenia, where pediatric vaccinations are not mandatory.
The drama is unfolding in these days between the hospitals of Cattinara, Trieste, and Borgo Trento in Verona, where the 45-year-old – intubated and unconscious – was transported by ambulance in a desperate attempt to make her and the fetus survive. Verona welcomed her after the unavailability of Padua and Milan, because the medical staff of the intensive care of Borgo Trento had already treated a similar case. This is why the transfer to the Venetian structure was decided, confirm the Councilor for Health of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, Riccardo Riccardi, and Professor Umberto Lucangelo, director of the Cattinara Emergency Department.
The Veronese intensive therapy is ready to use the Ecmo: an extracorporeal circulation technique that is used in the field of resuscitation for patients with acute cardiac or respiratory failure. Impossible to hazard a prognosis, warn in the ward. But the danger that the woman won’t make it is real. And the fetus, if the mother survives and it is possible to give birth, still risks brain damage caused by the lack of adequate oxygenation: the mother, due to respiratory failure, had hypoxemia. The outbreak developed in the family last week. The woman from Trieste thought she could come out unscathed from the infection and for this reason she took care of herself at home for days. Instead it got worse, without anyone realizing that Covid was ravaging her lungs. And that the virus was also circulating, first infecting her husband and then her 68-year-old mother, who is also now hospitalized in serious condition. Eventually they turned to 118, but perhaps it was too late.
