Vaccine, anti Covid shield: what happens 6 months after the second dose

In the latest weekly report on the performance of Covid-19 in Italy of the ISS, the Higher Institute of Health, we read that“after 6 months from the completion of the vaccination cycle, the effectiveness in preventing any symptomatic or asymptomatic diagnosis of Covid-19 drops from 79% to 55% compared to non-vaccinated people”. Instead, even if half a year has passed since immunization, it remains high, albeit reducing, “vaccination efficacy in preventing cases of severe disease: for those vaccinated with a full course for less than six months it is 95% compared to those not vaccinated, while it is 82% for those vaccinated with a full course for over 6 months than the unvaccinated “.

After six months

Therefore, as explained by the Higher Institute of Health in the latest weekly report on the trend of Covid-19 in Italy, after six months from the completion of the vaccination cycle, the effectiveness in preventing any symptomatic or asymptomatic diagnosis of Covid-19 drops from 79 % to 55% of the unvaccinated. Furthermore, as reported: “In the last 30 days, 50,564 Covid cases (39.9%) were notified among the unvaccinated, 3,980 cases (3.1%) among vaccine with incomplete course, 60,407 cases (47.7%) among those vaccinated with a full course within six months, 11,215 (8.9%) among those vaccinated with a full course over six months and 537 cases (0.4%) among full course vaccinated with additional dose / booster. 51.0% of hospitalizations, 64.0% of ICU admissions and 45.3% of deaths occurred among those who did not receive any dose of the vaccine “.

In the period between 8 October and 7 November, as always emphasized in the monitoring, 424 unvaccinated subjects were hospitalized for Covid out of a reference population of almost 8 million, which refers to the number of people who at October 30 were still not immunized, against 177 vaccinated with complete cycle for less than 6 months, on a reference population which at the end of October was almost 39 million. In the period of time taken into consideration, the 424 unvaccinated were equivalent to 64% of Covid hospitalizations in intensive care, while the 177 vaccinated to 26.7%.

Under 20 and children

A quarter of the new cases of Covid-19 in Italy concern the under 20s, while among the youngest children hospitalizations are climbing. In the weekly monitoring it is reported that“In the last week the trend observed in the previous one is confirmed, with 25% of cases diagnosed in the population aged below 20 years. 49% of school-age cases were diagnosed in the 6-11 age group. “ That is the age group for which the green light to the vaccine could soon arrive, and in which “starting from the second week of October, there is a greater increase in the incidence compared to the rest of the school age population, with a surge in the last 2 weeks”.

As for the subjects in school age “34% of cases were diagnosed in the 12-19 years range”, while “only 11% and 6%, respectively, between 3 and 5 years and under 3 years”. In any case, admissions are increasing among the little ones. Experts again pointed out that it was registered “an increase in the hospitalization rate in the age group under 3 years”, even though “just over 2 hospitalizations per 100 thousand inhabitants, in recent weeks, while in the other age groups it is stable”.
