Green light from the Minister of Health for the third dose of vaccine for the 40-59 age group. The recall must take place six months after completing the primary cycle. The information on the vaccine booster is provided by a circular signed by the general director of Prevention Gianni Rezza (in the picture), and also signed by Nicola Magrini, Silvio Brusaferro and Franco Locatelli.

The document justifies the choice to start the third doses for the 40-50 year old group but also emphasizes the urgency of vaccinating those who have not yet done so. In fact, the circular emphasizes “the absolute priority of putting subjects still waiting to start / complete the primary vaccination cycle in maximum protection, in particular as regards the categories most vulnerable to severe forms of Covid-19 due to age or high fragility “.

The document bears the subject “Update of the indications on the administration of ‘booster’ doses as part of the anti-SARS-CoV-2 / COVID-19 vaccination campaign” and follows the joint note of the Ministry of Health, CSS, AIFA and ISS , “without prejudice to the priority of vaccination of subjects still waiting to start / complete the primary vaccination cycle, as well as the administration of the ‘booster’ dose (booster) to the categories for which it is already recommended”.

“Starting from 1 December 2021 it will also be possible to proceed with the administration of the ‘booster’ dose, with m-RNA vaccine, even to subjects aged between 40 and 59 years, in the dosages authorized for the same (30 mcg in 0.3 mL for Comirnaty by Pfizer / BioNTech; 50 mcg in 0.25 mL for Spikevax by Moderna), provided that at least six months have elapsed since the completion of the primary vaccination course, regardless of the vaccine previously used “, reads the document . In short, the third dose will only take place with Pfizer or Moderna even if the vaccination cycle was performed with other sera.

“In consideration of the increased circulation of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which has determined an increase in the incidence of new infections, as detected over the last few weeks throughout the national territory (…) as well as the possibility of administering a booster dose with mRNA vaccine in favor of the categories and in the manner indicated (…) with a view to a progressive enlargement of the vaccine population, starting from the age groups at greatest risk, is recommended, starting from 1 December 2021, the administration of a dose of mRNA vaccine, as a booster of a primary vaccination cycle, also to subjects aged between 40 and 59 years, in the dosages authorized for the purpose (…) provided that at least six months have passed from the completion of primary school “reads the circular.
