On Sunday evening Vincenzo Spadafora, deputy of the 5 Star Movement and former Minister of Sport, said he was gay in an interview with Fabio Fazio during the TV program “Che tempo che fa”. Spadafora is 47 years old, he was a minister in the second government led by Giuseppe Conte and has long been one of the most influential leaders of the M5S.

There are very few outspoken homosexuals in Italian politics, and it is even more rare for a political figure to talk about his sexual orientation in a follow-up prime-time program.

Spadafora was Fazio’s guest to present his new book, Without reserve, recently released by the Solferino publishing house. Towards the end of the interview, Fazio anticipated that the book contains several references to Spadafora’s homosexuality, which began a very broad response citing both “those who fight for their rights every day and have less chance to do so”, and his major responsibilities as a visible political figure. Spadafora said he spoke of his homosexuality “also for myself, because I learned perhaps very late that it is very important to love and respect each other”.

“Maybe from tomorrow I’ll be just a little bit happier, because I’ll also be freer,” he concluded at the end of the interview.
