“An extraordinary result, but not unexpected. This is the answer in the face of stalemate, immobility and tohypocrisy of the Parliament and to the silence of the big parties“. This was claimed by the Organizing Committee of the Legal cannabis referendum, on the day of delivery di 630mila companies in the Court of Cassation, with the aim of going to the vote next spring to ask for changes to the current legislation. The referendum question – filed last September 7 and supported by associations such as Luca Coscioni, Meglio Legale, Forum Droghe, Antigone, as well as by parties such as Italian Radicals, + Europe, Italian Left, Possible, Volt, Power to the people and Communist Refoundation, in fact, proposes to intervene both on the level of criminal relevance as regards conduct related to cannabis, and on that of administrative sanctions in reference to detention. “Years of prohibition have proved unsuccessful. This it did not harm the mafias that control the drug market, nor have they reduced the circulation of drugs ”, Riccardo Magi (+ Europe) claimed.

The collection of signatures, launched on 11 September last, was carried out almost entirely online, thanks to the tool of the digital company. After the count of the signatures, the questions will pass under consideration by the Council and, if eligible, the referendum date will be set: “This is the only stumbling block. The fear is that the Constitutional Court find other excuses, beyond your mandate to declare admissibility or not ”, he explains Marco Perduca, chairman of the referendum committee. On the contrary, the committee does not fear parliamentary traps, evoked instead by Emma Bonino: “I would not like action to be taken to make some ‘scam’ in Parliament, so as not to hold the referendum. We are only at the beginning of the battle ”, explained the senator and historical radical exponent. However, fears reduced and removed from Perduca: “In the meantime, the work, bogged down for so long, is only at the beginning. Then the law should be touched in the sense that we touched it, that is, by removing the penalties. I don’t think parliamentary dynamics are going in this direction ”.

In the collection of signatures, the committee specified, many took part Young people, given that over 70% of the signatories are under the age of 35. The subscriptions came from large cities, but also from small municipalities, throughout the national territory: “A homogeneity that underlines the scope and interest”, the promoters specified.

“With a Parliament motionless on rights, as well as evident also with thesinking of the Zan law in the Senate, the referendum weapon is the only way in which citizens can make their voices heard ”, it was reiterated. “You can build a center-left capable of governing the country, but on issues such as cannabis and civil rights, clear choices are needed,” he added. Nicola Fratoianni, deputy and secretary of the Italian Left. “If I expect clear words from Letta and Conte now too? They owe it above all to their own voters ”, Magi also explained. “Faced with a Parliament blocked by opposing vetoes, this is an opportunity to give the floor back to the citizens. And, after their silence in times of collecting signatures, this referendum will also allow the big parties to reflect and decide. Other than click democracy ”, he concluded Marco Cappato, treasurer of the Luca Coscioni association.
