Climate, Lake Tuz disappears, larger than Turkey. Among the causes drought and agriculture

(LaPresse) For centuries, Lake Tuz, a hypersaline basin between the Turkish provinces of Ankara, Konya and Aksaray, hosted huge colonies of flamingos which migrated and reproduced there in the hot season, feeding on algae in its shallow waters. Last summer it was replaced by a place full of carcasses of small flamingos and adults scattered across a dry and cracked lake floor. The 1,665-square-meter lake, Turkey’s second largest, which is home to several bird species, has completely retreated this year. According to experts, Lake Tuz is a victim of climate change-induced drought, as well as decades of harmful agricultural policies, which have depleted underground water supplies. The fate of Lake Took is similar to that of other Turkish basins which have similarly dried up or retreated at alarming levels due to low rainfall and unsustainable irrigation practices.
