Finally, for lovers of literature and the magical world of books, back to Milan in the presence of Bookcity. From 17 to 21 November (but some streaming meetings start as early as 8 November) the Lombard capital will come alive: over 1400 events in 260 locations are the numbers of the tenth anniversary of the event which sees the writer David Grossman and Irvine Welsh.
Bookcity returns to Milan and does it in style with over 1400 events and 260 venues to properly celebrate its ten years. After last year’s streaming edition, from 17 to 21 November citizens of the Lombard capital who are passionate about literature and culture will be able to participate for free, booking their place on the official website, obtaining a green pass and mask. Some streaming events, on the other hand, will start as early as November 8th. The fil rouge of the event this year is “After”, to give a further sign of hope with respect to the tragic period of the pandemic. Among the long-awaited guests there is certainly the writer born in Jerusalem David Grossman and the Scotsman Irvine Welsh, as far as foreign authors are concerned. Regarding our local writers, it will be possible to hear from the winner of the Strega prize with “Due vite” Emanuele Trevi up to the essayist Francesco Vecchi. The opening event which will take place on November 17th at 8pm at the Dal Verme Theater will see Amin Maalouf receive the Seal of the city from the mayor Giuseppe Sala. For the special occasion, the writer Paolo Giordano he was invited to reflect on the main theme of this tenth edition, that future that always seems imminent and yet so ephemeral. There will also be a tribute to Luis Sepúlveda, who died in April 2020 precisely because of Covid, who inaugurated the first Milanese edition of the event. In addition to the events already mentioned, for those who are always attentive to current events, “Afghanistan, twenty years later”, in Sala Buzzati at the Corriere della Sera Foundation, on November 19 from 2.30 pm to 10.30 pm will see a tribute to the journalist killed twenty years ago on the road to Kabul, Maria Grazia Cutuli. The meeting was attended by, among others, the Minister of Justice Marta Cartabia, the Secretary General of the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) Filippo Grandi, the Senator and former Foreign Minister Emma Bonino, and the writer Paolo Giordano.
Poetry lovers cannot miss the poetry review “Poetry and the city”, entitled Porta Poetry in memory of the death of Carlo Porta. The November 19th at 5pm, in the Frescoes room at the Humanitarian Society, with the appointment Carlo, l‘Heretic we will talk about anticlericalism, and the satirical force of the Milanese poet. To close the tenth anniversary of the event, on November 21 at 7.30 pm will be the evening with Simonetta Agnello Hornby, Paolo Bacilieri, Marco Balzano, Jonathan Bazzi, Michela Marzano, Nadeesha Uyangoda and Vittorio Lingiardi, just some of the authors who participated in the realization of the volume 10 years of BookCity Milano.
The event “Salvatore Veca: culture as a commitment “, on November 19th at 8.30 pm at the Feltrinelli Foundation, to remember the Italian philosopher, and for comics lovers at the Wow Space Comic Strip the exhibition will be on display Fumetto. Biography lovers on Wednesday 10 November, at 7 pm, will be able to follow Benjamin Taylor, one of the most important memoir authors in the world, author, among others, of a famous biography of Marcel Proust. On Thursday 11 November at 7 pm, it will be the turn of Brit Bennett, included by TIME among the 100 most influential under 30s in the world, who will bring inside her work, between destiny and self-determination. The special guest of the 2021 edition will be the writer David Grossman, born in Jerusalem, author of the famous novels “Someone to run with”, “There are children in zig zag”, “May you be the knife for me” and “My love looks like a fawn”, a story inspired by the tragic death of his son Uri, which took place in 2006 in the Lebanon war. It will be possible to follow in streaming at 7.45 pm on November 13 in dialogue with other artists.
Bookcity 2021 for schools, events scheduled for children
This year 900 classes will be involved in the event in 240 BookCity projects for Schools, 13 Milanese universities and academies will participate in BookCity Università with over 140 initiatives and more than 50 BookCity events and projects for Social. Thursday is dedicated to the world of schools, to promote the book also in the younger generations. Among these, on November 18 at 5 pm, at the Enzo Baldoni Auditorium in Bonola, the volume “We are the stories: diaries from the land of Coronavirus – Best of” will be presented, with the testimonies of children, teachers and authors in a large collective diary of the pandemic, thanks to the initiative of the Superheroes Training Center. At 7 pm, the event entitled “#After – What does it mean for the students of Milanese high schools?”, A contest that brings the students to the stage, led by an exceptional witness.
