Weather ALERT in ITALY, what to do in case of FLOOD. Important details to READ

Weather ALERT in ITALY, what to do in case of FLOODSome areas of our country are living, in these hours, difficult times due to the furious bad weather which is breaking down due to the formation of a Mediterranean cyclone. We are talking, in particular, of some regions of the South, including Sicily and Calabria. On the Calabria was issued by the Civil protection, a’red weather alert, which means the real risk of flash floods, with possible inconvenience.

But what to do in the event of a flood?
Knowing a phenomenon is the first step to learn how to deal with it in the most correct way and to defend against any dangers. For this reason, the Department is engaged in awareness campaigns to spread some simple rules on how to prevent or reduce the damage caused by a phenomenon.

Remember that during and after floods, river water is heavily polluted and carries debris floats that can hit you. Also, machines and materials can temporarily clog streets or passages that suddenly give way. Secure your car in areas not reachable by flooding in the times and methods identified in the emergency plan of your municipality.

It is also useful to have always available a flashlight and a battery-powered radio, to tune into local stations and listen to any useful information. Rescue goods placed in floodable premises, only if you are in conditions of maximum safety. Make sure all people potentially at risk are aware of the situation. If you live on a high floor, offer hospitality to those who live on the floors below and vice versa if you live on the lower floors, ask for hospitality. Place bulkheads to protect the premises located on the street level and close or block the doors of cellars or basements. If you don’t run the risk of flooding, preferably stay indoors. Reminds all family members of the behaviors to adopt in an emergency, such as turning off the gas or calling the emergency numbers.

Avoid using the car except in strictly necessary cases. If you are driving, do not try to reach your intended destination anyway. Get as far away from the flooded area as possible and if you can find shelter in a safe building. Avoid to transit or stop along the banks of waterways, over bridges or walkways. Avoid underpasses as they can easily flood. If you are on a trip or excursion, rely on local people: they may know safe areas. Move away to the highest places and never go down. Avoid going under natural or artificial escarpments. Do not take shelter under isolated trees as they may attract lightning during a thunderstorm. Use the phone only for cases of real need to avoid overloading the lines.

After reaching the safe area, pay close attention to the information provided by the civil protection authorities, through radio, TV and clearly identifiable civil protection vehicles.

After a flood, before drinking tap water, make sure there are no municipal ordinances that they forbid it; do not eat foods that have come into contact with flood water, they could be contaminated. In short, we talked about very important issues that in moments of calm and clarity like this, that is, reading them in front of a tablet or computer screen seem obvious and trivial actions, but it is not so.
You have to pay attention, always.
