The shoes, signed by MJ, date back to the first NBA season of the greatest basketball player in history and are the model from which the Air Jordan series was born that continues today.

Also record-breaking at auction. It is the fate of Michael Jordan, who at 58 never ceases to amaze even though he retired from basketball in 2003. A couple of hers Nike shoes from 1984, the Air Ship, was in fact auctioned by Sotheby’s in Las Vegas for 1 million and 472 thousand dollars (1 million and 263 thousand euros), the highest amount ever paid for a pair of sneakers, the first time ever over one million dollars. The collector Nick Fiorella bought them.

This is the white model with the red Nike swoosh signed by the player and worn by Jordan in his fifth game of his rookie season in the NBA. A pair in overall good condition, with obvious signs of wear from time that for fans give the item that extra vintage flavor. Le Air Ship – designed by Bruce Kilgore – they were the first shoe worn by Michael Jordan in the NBA and in fact they are the basis from which the famous Air Jordan series was born in 1985 which continues today, reached number 36 without losing charm and popularity, growing after the success of the series “The Last Dance” on Netflix in 2020.

It is certainly not the first time that a pair of Jordans have been sold at staggering prices. In May 2020 just like the Air Jordan 1

worn by Michael Jordan in 1985 had sold for 463 thousand euros (615 thousand dollars). It was the famous model that at the time was banned by the NBA because it violated the coloring code in force at the time and it is no coincidence that they went down in history as the “Banned”. Nike used the ban as an extraordinary commercial flywheel, as every time MJ wore them, the player was forced to pay a fine to the League. It was in fact, the first big marketing move linked to Jordans and sneakers and the real
first step in building the brand’s empire
which still sells 10 times more than all others linked to active players such as LeBron James or Kevin Durant, both under contract to Nike
