Medals continue to rain on Italy that rides. This time it is the track to be tinged with blue and to give satisfactions in series to the Italian athletes, as confirmed by the final medal table of the World Championships in Roubaix: Germany laurels 11 (6 golds, 2 silvers and 3 bronzes), Holland 10 (5-3 -2) and Italy also with 10, but with 4 golds, 3 silvers and as many bronze medals. The last two results materialized today, on the final day of the world championship that started on Wednesday, thanks to Elia Viviani and the couple formed by Filippo Consonni and Michele Scartezzini: the first took gold in the elimination race, the others two blues the silver in Madison. In recent days there had been a continuous series of successes, both for men and women, confirming how the blue movement is alive and absolutely performing at every level. After all, last month’s World Road Championships, held in Belgium, the home of cycling, had shown it.
And from Roubaix, the French town well-known because it was the cradle of the epilogue of the classic of the classics – this year won, coincidentally by an Italian, Sonny Colbrelli – other satisfactions arrived. The gold medals won were those of Martina Fidanza in scratch, the male quartet of the chase, Letizia Paternoster and Elia Viviani in the elimination. The three silver medals came from Jonathan Milan in the individual pursuit, from the women’s pursuit quartet, then from the Consonni-Scartezzini duo in the madison. Finally, the three bronzes signed by Filippo Ganna in the men’s pursuit, by Elisa Balsamo and also by Viviani in their respective Omnium tournaments. Basically, a triumph. “I don’t know whether to see the glass half full or half empty – Consonni commented, after the silver medal – since we were gold medalists until a few laps from the end. I have not yet metabolized the disappointment of the Olympics, I wanted to redeem myself and go so good”. Viviani closes with a gold and a bronze, it is the first time that she has taken a world title on the track, after the Olympic title in Rio 2016 in the Omnium. “I am really happy, because this is a world title that makes history, since it is awarded for the first time – in Viviani’s words -. I had focused the season on the Tokyo Olympics and it was not easy to prepare for these World Championships, especially for we athletes who take part in road races. I am proud to have finally managed to conquer a world title on the track and to have led a group of young people who will give Italy a lot of satisfaction “.
