Japan, a volcano erupts and ships from the Second World War emerge from the seabed

In Japan they called it «the spectacle of ghost ships». Volcanic activity 1,300 kilometers south of Tokyo gave birth to an incredible scenario: from a new island (also visible thanks to the eruptions) the remains of the warships of the Second World War only partially sunk. And that until a few weeks ago they were only partially visible. Near Tokyo volcanoes have been erupting since the end of August: the seismic activity of one of them, the vulcano submarine called Fukutoku-Okanoba, created a new small C-shaped island. But the movement of the tectonic plates gave rise to the island also pushed up the neighboring island of Iwo Jima, exposing the vessels, although they have always been visible.

Images of warships

The images of the new islet and the ships – released by tv-asahi.co.jp – immediately made the rounds of Japanese social media. The last time an island emerged from the volcano Fukutoku-Okanoba it was 35 years ago. Some have called it an “incredible show” while on Twitter there are those who jokingly wondered if in 20 years there will be those who will go to live directly on those ships. According to the Japanese coast guard, the newly emerging islet is actually hardened lava from the underwater volcano Fukutoku-Okanoba. The island is made up of pumice and volcanic ash, and experts predicted it won’t survive long.

The Battle of Iwo Jima

Ships are expected to date from the battle of Iwo Jima, one of the clashes over the end of the Second World War. There the US Marines landed and seized the island, killing more than 20,000 Japanese soldiers, nearly three times the number of American soldiers killed in the same battle.
