Ford, the Mustang Mach-E sells more than the Mondeo in Europe

Ford shared the data of the sales in the third quarter of 2021 in Europe from which an interesting fact emerges. The new electric Mustang Mach-E already sells more of Mondeo. In Q3 2021, the electric SUV was sold in 10,161 units, while the Mondeo stops at 3,638 cars. Since the beginning of the year, the battery-powered model has been sold in 15,602 units while the endothermic in 10,427 units.

Of course, the Mondeo situation is very different than in the past. The success of SUVs has gradually eroded sales of sedans and we already know that the Mondeo is destined to be retired. Starting from March 2022, the American brand will begin to gradually cease the production of this model. Recently, however, some spy photos of a possible heir of the Mondeo have appeared but the only certainty, at the moment, is that the sedan (the Mondeo is also sold in other versions including the station wagon) will go out of production.

The overtaking is however significant considering the success that Mondeo has had in the past and it is a precise sign of how the market is changing, increasingly oriented towards SUV models and towards electrification. We must not forget that the electric car costs much more than the Mondeo. The sales numbers of the Mustang Mach-E in Europe are certainly a positive sign for the manufacturer of the blue oval for the future, as new battery-powered models will arrive on the European market. In fact, in 2023, a new electric car based on the MEB platform will debut.

The Mustang Mach-E seems to have come at the right time to grasp the changes in the market. The idea of using the name “Mustang”, a reference to the Ford sports car, probably gave a little boost to the success of this model. Returning to the data for the quarter, the best-selling model is the Ford Puma with 33,001 units. In second place we find the Ford Kuga, in third the Ford Focus, then the Ford Fiesta and precisely the electric Mustang.

Overall, including commercial vehicles, Ford sold 194,460 units in Europe in Q3 2021. It deals with a decrease of 35.2% compared to the same period of 2020. A decline essentially due to the problem of the chip crisis.
