“They feel ululare every night and they run too from the case“. A year after the last sighting, the wolves have returned to cortina d’Ampezzo: a herd has settled in the woods that overlook the town of Cadin, less than a kilometer and a half – three minutes by car – from the very center Corso Italy. Animals have also been immortalized by some phototrapole a Fiames, further north, but connected by a path to the city centre. Not far from the town – on the opposite side of the valley – also the hospital of Cortina and the fraction of Key. The inhabitants are worry: “I have a little dog and in the evening – a resident told Courier Veneto – when I take him for a walk before bed, I stay in the close vicinity of the house, however fear to meet them “.
The presence of wolves in the area is nothing new: three years ago a cross country skier had come across a specimen in the area of Pian de Loa. The woman had even managed to take one Photo of the fleeing animal. At that time, however, many had believed it was only a Czechoslovakian wolf, a dog breed widespread among the inhabitants of the area. The possibility that the wolves had returned, however, had been confirmed by Michele Da Pozzo, the director of the Dolomiti d’Ampezzo Park. The sighting coincided with the debates on the project “Life Wolfalps“, For the protection of herds in the Alps. The then regional councilor Sergio Berlato proposed the hunting per fight the repopulation of the species. While the Regional Councilor for Agriculture, Joseph Pan, suggested the sterilization.
The project for the protection of wolves is still active today and provides for the reporting of animals through the site www.lifewolfsalp.eu. At the same time we are trying to understand how to make the animal coexist with man. Many breeders have applied through the site to have gods shepherd dogs to protect the their cattle. Meanwhile, however, the wolves continued to move and if they remain downstream, a solution will have to be studied for monitor litters. Just last January a herd had been seen by a car on the road coming down from Step Three Crosses towards Cortina.
