“We have vaccinated more than other EU countries and in spite of England we have kept some precautions, such as the mask and the distancing”: said the Prime Minister, Mario Draghi, at the end of the European Council, stating that for this reason the epidemiological situation is currently better in Italy than in other European countries.
The Prime Minister, Mario Draghi, spoke at the press conference at the end of the European Council to take stock of the issues discussed today. The summit focused on the issue of migration, at the center of discussions today: “I am very satisfied with how the discussion ended. The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen has reopened the discussion on revision of the reception and asylum pactO“. On the request of some countries to finance walls on the external borders of the EU with European funds, Draghi clarified:”It is not true that the EU is open to this. The committee disagrees and many in the European Council disagree, including us“. Returning to the reopening of the discussion on the asylum pact, Draghi underlined:”The problem that Italy has experienced alone for many years, because we have been left alone, is now everyone’s problem. Everyone agreed on one thing we have been saying for a long time, namely that the European Union must act united on returns and readmissions.“.
“Vaccination campaign must continue to go well”
On the progress of the Covid pandemic Draghi said: “The infections are on the rise, much more in other countries. So far in Italy they are greater than a few days ago, we must understand if they are greater due to the much higher number of tampons or is it the result of a spread“of the virus. To then underline that in any case what matters is that”the vaccination campaign you keep going well. We have vaccinated more than other EU countries and in spite of England we have kept some precautions, such as the mask and the distancing“. On the third dose he specified:”It will be necessary, for certain categories especially, we will proceed in order of vulnerability and in that sense it will be done“.
What’s happening between Brussels and Warsaw
There was also talk of what is happening with the Poland: “The issue of law vis-à-vis Poland was also touched upon, even if it was not on the agenda. There was an in-depth discussion with different points of view, but no change in the Commission’s procedure. The essence of the discussion is that there are no alternatives: the laws are clear. The primary law, the Treaty, has been called into question. When the basis of the Union is called into question, it is clear that the Commission must move forward. We are clearly willing to continue the political dialogue with Poland“.
What Draghi said about the cost of energy
At the press conference Draghi also talked about what is happening in energy market, stating that “there is a need for more structural and long-term measures“. The expensive price”shows the need to have a strategy that aims at the strategic autonomy of the Union and it is on this that the Commission will start working“. For his part, Draghi stressed that Italy has asked to”take immediate action at EU level“. It’s still: “We have been very explicit on storage: there is a need to immediately begin to prepare the hypothesis of integrated storage as regards strategic stocks, and to begin to make a sort of inventory of the reserves that are available today in the various Villages“. Finally, Draghi concluded:”It is difficult to give up on gas immediately, but the point of arrival can only be renewables. If gas prices rise, there is also a problem of financing this path. But that is the point of arrival“.
