HD172555 is a young star (only 23 million years old, counting that our Sun is 4.6 billion) protagonist of the formation of a planetary system. Usually these events are really a mess. The materials begin to aggregate in swirling discs, the planets begin to form, the bodies collide and continue to transform and grow until, after a long time, some sort of balance is created.

Now astronomers have managed to detect one of these collisions, something so violent that it has stripped one of the two worlds of its atmosphere.

“This is the first time we have detected this phenomenon: a stripped protoplanetary atmosphere in a gigantic impact,” said MIT astronomer Tajana Schneiderman.

“Everyone is interested in observing such an impact because we know there are many in the universe, but we have very little hard evidence recorded. Now we finally have more information on these dynamics.”

We know that most planets don’t form where they eventually end; on the contrary, it undergoes intense disturbances, clashes and displacements and these events are crucial for the initial life of a world.

We discovered all this by observing the gases and debris found near HD172555.
