(ANSA) – BEIJING, OCTOBER 22 – South Korean President Moon Jae-in will make a three-stage European trip next week to attend the G20 summit in Italy, the COP26 climate summit in Great Britain and a state visit to Hungary .

During the first stop, Moon, who is a Catholic, will meet Pope Francis at the Vatican on October 29 to discuss peace on the Korean peninsula and efforts against the pandemic, presidential spokesman Park Kyung-mee said.

Moon, at the G20 on October 30-31, plans to discuss with world leaders how to tackle the climate crisis, fight the pandemic and global economic recovery.

After Italy, Moon will go to Glasgow, Scotland, for the COP26 on the climate (1-2 November): the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions will be at the top of the agenda of the UN conference. Last week, Moon announced plans to cut South Korea’s greenhouse gas emissions by 40% from 2018 levels by 2030, boosting the country’s efforts.

Moon, according to the Yonhap agency, has also confirmed carbon neutrality by 2050.

In the last leg, Moon will make a state visit to Hungary on November 2. After the commemoration of the 25 South Korean tourists who died in 2019 from the sinking of a boat in Budapest, the president will meet his counterpart Janos Ader and Prime Minister Viktor Orban. On 4 November in Budapest there will be the second summit between the Visegrad Group (Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia) and South Korea. (ANSA).
