Honda NT1100: unveiled the new 102 horsepower tourer with 17 wheels – News

Many riders today want performance, handling, comfort on the go and full equipment, but they are not attracted to modern maxienduros. First because they may not have to go off-road. Secondly, those super tall saddles are often a nuisance. Honda thought of them when designing the its new ‘touring crossover (so he defines it in the presentation press release released today).

The new Honda NT1100 winks at longtime Hondists, which still today regret unique motorbikes like Deauville and Pan European. But it also aims to conquer all motorcyclists who love motorcycle tourism. Available in three color variants – Matte Iridium Gray Metallic, Pearl Glare White and Graphite Black – it shows an elegant, sober line, with a lot of care dedicated to protection from the air. The windshield is adjustable in 5 positions and the presence of deflectors on the fairing and on the fairing improves the shelter.

Practicality comes first thanks to side cases, heated grips, center stand, cruise control and the USB and ACC sockets as standard. The lights are full-LED and with automatic DRL system and the direction indicators provide for automatic deactivation and the flashing function for emergency braking signaling. The saddle is placed at 820 mm.

On a technical level there is a strong bond with her majesty, the Africa Twin 1100. Il semi-double cradle steel frame, with aluminum seat post, it uses suspension with increased travel compared to a pure road (150 mm), with Showa SFF-BP fork and shock absorber both adjustable in spring preload (hydraulic, with knob, at the rear).
Powerful brakes, with radial-mount 4-piston calipers on 310 mm discs at the front. The tires measure 120 / 70-17 “and 180 / 55-17” and underline the road vocation of the NT1100.

The engine, derived from that of the Honda Africa Twin 1100, develops a maximum power of 102 HP and a maximum torque of 104 Nm, with a specific tuning of the intake and exhaust. The declared consumption, equal to 20 km / l in the medium cycle, gives a range of 400 km thanks to the 20-liter tank.
Then he could not miss it a DCT version also for the new NT1100, a solution suitable for the type of use of the new Japanese tourer The electronic package is complete and state-of-the-art. The dashboard provides a 6.5 ”TFT color touch screen with Apple CarPlay®, Android Auto® and Bluetooth® connectivity.
The throttle control is Throttle by Wire and the engine management offers 3 preset Riding Modes (TOUR, URBAN, RAIN) and 2 fully customizable, including HSTC traction control and antiwheelie levels.

The starting point of the NT1100, namely the steel semi-double cradle frame and bolt-on aluminum subframe, is the well proven and robust CRF1100L Africa Twin platform.
To match the versatile character of the NT1100, the long travel suspension of the maxienduro has been replaced by equipment geared towards maximum efficiency on the road, combined with more agile chassis geometries. The Showa SFF-BP 43 mm cartridge inverted fork guarantees a travel of 150 mm and is adjustable in the spring preload. The pressurized single-tube Showa rear shock absorber – with 14mm diameter rod – also features 150mm wheel travel.
To adjust the set-up in case of luggage or passenger transport, the spring preload is adjustable with a hydraulic knob adjuster. Aluminum wheels are obtained for die casting end with a sand heart, which allows you to create a cavity in the center of the front hub. The cross-spoke and diagonal design offers several benefits: it dampens vibrations and guarantees conspicuous stiffness when cornering.
The tires measure 120 / 70-17 front. and 180 / 55-17 post. The wheelbase measures 1,535 mm, the inclination of the steering tube 26.5 ° and the forward travel 108 mm, with 175 mm height from the ground. The weight with a full tank of petrol (20 liter tank) of the NT1100 with manual gearbox is 238 kg, 248 kg for the DCT version. The 4-piston radial calipers bite into the twin 310mm floating discs, while the 256mm rear disc uses a 1-piston caliper. The braking system is controlled by ABS.

The 1084cc SOHC 8-valve parallel twin engine of the NT1100 is the high-performance and extremely reliable unit that also equips the CRF1100L Africa Twin. The maximum power is 102 CV (75 kW) a 7.250 giri/min and maximum torque is 104 Nm at 6,250 rpm. It is characterized by the 270 ° crankshaft timing and ignition with irregular bursts. Throttle By Wire (TBW) throttle control allows effective engine management in all driving conditions.
The delivery setup differs from that of the Africa Twin due to differences in the air intake system and internal parts of the exhaust system. The consequence is a pleasant “pulsation” at low revs and a smooth and progressive acceleration. The crankcase is divided vertically and the water pump is housed inside the clutch housing, with a thermostat integrated in the cylinder head. The crankcase of the DCT version is almost identical to that of the version with manual transmission, with only some visible differences in the external appearance.
With regard to vibrations, the second order forces of inertia are canceled out by the reciprocal movement of the pistons, while the first order inertia forces and the roll torque are canceled out by two balancing countershafts. The water and oil pumps are driven by the balance shafts. The presence of a phonic wheel, with teeth spaced at 10 ° intervals, ensures the detection of misfires, an important function for OBD2 / EURO5 compliance. For the same purpose, LAF (Linear Air Fuel) sensors in the manifolds allow accurate measurement of the air / fuel mixture ratio.
The TBW throttle control handles engine performance and character, as well as HSTC traction control and wheelie wheelie control. The rider can choose between 3 preset Riding Modes that cover a wide variety of riding conditions thanks to the 3 adjustment levels for P (Power) and EB (Engine Brake), with level 1 providing the maximum of both parameters. Level 3 of T (HSTC traction control) and W (antiwheelie) indicate maximum intervention.
URBAN mode: suitable for everyday use, it guarantees an always easily manageable power supply and an intermediate engine brake.
RAIN mode: Softens engine power delivery and reduces engine braking for added safety on wet or slippery surfaces. TOUR mode: direct power delivery and intermediate engine brake, it is designed for suburban and motorway routes even when fully loaded with passenger and luggage.
USER modes 1 and 2 offer the driver the possibility to freely set all parameters. Once set, the USER mode is stored, so it is not necessary to re-enter the settings each time the engine is started.

In addition to the 6-speed manual transmission, the NT1100 is offered with the DCT system, which offers two distinct driving approaches. The automatic transmission, with programmed shift patterns that constantly read vehicle speed, selected gear and engine rpm to decide when to shift; and manual gearbox (MT), to manually engage the gear using the paddles on the handlebar of the left block. You can choose between two automatic transmission settings: D (Drive) for relaxed driving and maximum fuel efficiency, S (Sport) for more responsive driving. The S mode offers 3 levels: the first is the most contained, with gear changes at medium revs, while the third allows for a more aggressive driving style with high revs. Level 2 is the intermediate option. The system saves the last choice entered and sets it to the next selection.
