On Tuesday, the Council of Ministers appointed the new commanders of the Defense, the Navy and the Air Force, who will take the place of the current ones (whose mandates expire in early November). The appointments were made on the proposal of the Minister of Defense Lorenzo Guerini, and have favored figures with a long operational career in contexts of international conflicts.

The most important position, the one highest in the hierarchy of the armed forces (under him are the Army, the Navy, the Air Force and the Carabinieri), is that of Chief of Staff of Defense (SMD ): it was entrusted to Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone (currently owned by General Enzo Vecciarelli). Dragone, 64, was Chief of Staff of the Navy: he has two degrees, he is a helicopter and airplane pilot – he has operated, among other things, in Lebanon and Afghanistan – and has already received several honors.

The position of Chief of Staff of the Navy was given to Admiral Enrico Credendino, 58, who headed the European Union’s anti-trafficking naval program, known as Operation Sofia. The position of Chief of Staff of the Air Force was instead given to Luca Goretti, 59, a highly experienced general who participated in the first Gulf conflict in 1991, and in the wars in Bosnia and Kosovo.
