LONDON – Now in London they are starting to worry. After that new Covid cases have been seen to travel over 40,000 per day
for more than a week and after the death toll – over 200 – reaches the levels of early March, glaring cracks emerge in the nonchalance with which the government – and public opinion – have declassified the pandemic. In recent days, Boris Johnson’s scientific and medical advisors have raised the issue in private: but the prime minister continues to ensure that everything under control. However, the head of the Confederation of the national health service, which represents health professionals and bodies, has asked for the urgent reintroduction of restrictive measures for avoid plunging into a crisis. An appeal which was echoed by numerous scientists and experts.

This does not seem to be the orientation of the government: at the moment everything is focused on the third dose of vaccines, the distribution of which is however slow. Therefore, appeals to citizens to come forward once they have been contacted by the vaccination centers multiply. The reality is that Johnson and his ministers don’t particularly care about the infection boom, since the level of hospitalizations and deaths remains relatively low: the most pessimistic scenarios widespread in July, when all restrictions were lifted, did not occur. It is known that it exists a secret number of daily deaths that the government is willing to accept before triggering the alarm: it seems to be 250 (and we are dangerously close).

an issue that is raised openly by commentators in the newspapers: what level of mortality are we ready to tolerate in order not to give up our freedoms? a question to which public opinion has already implicitly given an answer: the British now appear addicted to the pandemic, almost anesthetized, and do not pay much attention to it (also because for months Covid had practically disappeared from the media agenda). The cartoon published today on the Guardian: two young people observe a huge coronavirus crossing the street and the boy tells the girl I’m sure I recognize that guy but I don’t remember where from…. Johnson still has a plan B in store, in case the situation gets out of hand: it involves the reintroduction of masks indoors, the recommendation to work from home and perhaps even the use of the green pass for discos and large events. But what is excluded is the return to social distancing or forms of lockdown. We are once again witnessing a race against time: between viruses and vaccines.
