Earthquakes: Italy is also a high-risk country because it is crossed by numerous faults arising from the Alpine and Apennine orogeny that occurred respectively 100 and 20 million years. The accumulation of energy of these still active tectonic thrusts periodically manifests itself in the sudden shift of these fault planes that generate earthquakes even of large proportions. At risk are mainly the eastern Alpine areas and the Apennines, in particular the central southern one.
