Russian prison authorities said Alexei Navalny, the main opponent of Russian President Vladimir Putin, was transferred to a prison hospital near the city of Vladimir, less than 200 kilometers east of Moscow.

The news of the transfer was released after Navalny’s doctors had spoken of the poor health of their patient, who could have died “within days”. The situation had worsened since March 31, when Navalny went on a hunger strike in prison to protest the lack of adequate medical care. Navalny – who is facing a two-and-a-half-year sentence for violation of probation – had long complained of severe back pain and numbness in his right leg, both caused by a pinched nerve.

Prison authorities also said Navalny agreed to take vitamins and said his health was “satisfactory”.
