Four days of music, reading and talk in the most effervescent district of Milan

with Elliott Sharp & Eric Mingus, the Bobo Trio, Claudio Sanfilippo, Marco Brioschi,

Maurizio Brunod, Massimiliano Milesi, Boris Savoldelli and many others

MILAN – After a few itinerant seasons organized outside the city limits, theAHUM Milano Jazz Festival / Live the Island that plays will return to animate the Isola district, which for many years has been its place of choice, since Thursday 28 a Sunday 31 October.

Now in its 22nd year of activity, the festival is organized with the patronage of Municipality 9, the Municipality of Milan and the Lombardy Region, the support of Vivident and Sesto Autoveicoli and the collaboration of the Isola District and numerous local operators. Inserted in the JAZZMI programming and curated by the artistic director Antonio Ribatti, the event will also this year involve leading musicians of the national and international jazz scene: Elliott Sharp & Eric Mingus, the Bobo Trio, Claudio Sanfilippo, Marco Brioschi, Maurizio Brunod, Massimiliano Milesi, Boris Savoldelli and many others.

Live music obviously in the foreground, but not only: during the new edition ofAHUM Milano Jazz Festival / Live the Island that plays there will be space, in fact, for other moments of sharing and entertainment, from the presentation of books to meetings with musicians, from the vinyl market to wine tasting (organized by the Pavia winery Ca ‘degli Orsi). Four days to live in the name of socialization, fun and culture.

The first day of the festival will take place Thursday 28 October with a series of concerts and widespread events organized in the clubs, pubs and restaurants of the Isola district: a musical marathon that will take place from aperitif time until late evening and which will see the participation of some of the most representative bands and formations of the city scene such as the Brazilians Trio Brazil al 41 Wine bar & More, the trio Mujo all’AngoloMilano, the Gioel Severini Trio al That’s Milano, the quartet Ujig al NordEst Caffè and the bluesman Max Prandi al Taj Mahal.

Friday 29 October the festival will stop at the cultural space Zone K: the singer-songwriter Claudio Sanfilippo, the jazz trumpeter Marco Brioschi, the writer Gino Cervi e the actor, director and author Davide Ferrari they will bring the show to life “The words above Milan” (8.30 pm; admission 10-15 euros): words and music will meet to tell the evocations, sounds and colors of a language that flows through the hidden veins of the city. A journey along the great river of Milanese poetry, from Carlo Porta to Delio Tessa, up to Franco Loi.

Saturday 30th October the spotlight will be on Bobo Trio, that is Alessio Menconi (guitar), Faso (electric bass) eChristian Meyer (drums), which al Fontana Theater (8.30 pm; admission 17-21 euros) will present “Sensurround”, their most recent album: the name of the album – the third of the group – is borrowed from a sound system for cinema patented in the 70s by Universal, whose effect was to “surround” the audience with low frequencies, making movie viewing much more intense and real. “Sensurround” it is a work that definitively focuses on the peculiar style and concepts that Faso, Meyer and Menconi have been pursuing since 2002, that is to propose “music well composed and recorded live by men of flesh and blood, as was done in the ’70s”. “Sensurround” is the project that summarizes all the musical influences that make up the band’s DNA: jazz, rock, blues, progressive, funk and even a little bit of discomusic, all seasoned with spices extracted from African rhythms.

Many appointments planned by the organizers during Sunday 31 October, the last day of the festival, which will take place entirely at Napoleonic Eugenia Foundry, in via Di Revel 21, between the vinyl market, wine tastings, meetings with writers and musicians, DJ sets and concerts: at 11 am (Free admission) there will be the presentation of “Franco D’Andrea. A portrait”, biography dedicated to the great pianist and composer Franco D’Andrea, edited by the journalist, writer and critic Flavio Caprera, published by the EDT publishing house and embellished by the preface by Enrico Rava. D’Andrea, 80 years old last March, is one of the most important musicians in the history of European jazz, an authentic modernizer, capable of bringing this music from a conception oriented to the repetition of American forms and genres to the contemporary. D’Andrea himself and Claudio Sessa, jazz critic of Corriere della Sera.

In the late afternoon and in the evening space for live music: at 18.30 (admission 10-15 euros) the trio composed by Maurizio Brunod (electric guitar, effects, electronics), Massimiliano Milesi (tenor sax) e Boris Savoldelli (vocals, effects, electronics) which, with the project entitled “Progressive nostalgia”, will give a new look, between jazz and electronic, to some famous songs of progressive rock, drawing from the repertoires of historical groups such as King Crimson, Kraftwerk, Nucleus, Elvis Costello and Soft Machine. Theirs will not be a simple tribute to prog-rock in jazz sauce, but an original reinterpretation, between acoustic, electric and electronic sounds. Brunod, Milesi and Savoldelli will revive the magical atmosphere of the English brand prog through a new, contemporary and engaging filter.

Finally, do not miss the performance of two great international artists such as Elliott Sharp & Eric Mingus: their concert (9 pm; admission 15-20 euros) will be the closing event of the AHUM Milano Jazz Festival and will revolve around the recent electroacoustic project “Fourth Blood Moon”.

Central figure of the New York avant-garde for over 30 years, Elliott Sharp (electric guitar and compositions) has published dozens and dozens of recordings, ranging from orchestral music, blues, jazz, noise, no-wave rock and techno.“Fourth Blood Moon” it is a happy example of unusual sounds, engaging rhythms and hypnotic moments. In this work, Eric Mingus, son of the great double bass player Charles, gives voice to Sharp’s compositions, exploiting his versatility: with a classical setting, Eric was formed and established breathing jazz, soul and blues, without forgetting funk, rock and hip-hop.
